The Stigma Behind The Communication Major

We are not a joke. Seriously. I'm not kidding ...

The Stigma Behind The Communication Major
The Odyssey

As part of the communication department, I think we can all agree that others outside of it tend to think of us as a joke. I feel like whenever someone outside my major asks what mine is, I'm met with things like "That's not a real major," or "That's a joke."

Alright, so you may be a mechanical engineering major or an athletic training (AT) major, and that may require a lot more of your time being dedicated to work. Contrary to popular belief, a communication major actually does dedicate a lot of their time to their school work. Between the amount of time spent in class and lectures and then writing assignments, it adds up. It may not be crazy math questions like this:

, but good writing skills are hard to come by and highly valued these days.

Just because our work load doesn't take up ALL of our time doesn't mean we don't do anything except go to class, party and sleep. No one takes us seriously because apparently, as a communication major, we don't take ourselves, or life, seriously. Now that may be true for some people, but I don't think that has anything to do with your major. One of my good friends and fellow communication student is the absolute opposite of the typical communication stereotype. She holds the editor in chief position at several on-campus organizations as well as other leadership roles. Not everyone will be as motivated and dedicated as she is because she went above and beyond, but we are not deadbeats that are going nowhere in life.

Also, we did not choose this major because we aren't good at anything else. We chose this major because this is what we want to do, just like a mechanical engineering major might want to work for Boeing or an AT major might want to be a physical therapist for children. A communications major has options, they can be a journalist, work in public relations or produce TV shows or films. Yup, that's right, it's the comm majors that are behind all of your beloved television entertainment.

So, the next time you want to bash us because we don't have to bust our arses quite as often as you, remember all the things that you love that you wouldn't have without us.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
