Going into sophomore year, I wasn't expecting the workload I received. I've always heard that junior year is the worst and although I haven't experienced it yet, sophomore year has given me an insight on what to expect in my upcoming school year. This year consisted of many late nights and a lot of iced coffee (shout out to Dunkin' for never letting me down). There have been a lot of overwhelming moments this year, and I have really understood the importance of self care. Here are just a few of the steps I took.

1. Take 15 minute breaks when studying for long periods of time.

Breaks are super important to me when studying. Normally, I like to take breaks in between subjects in order to reward myself for finishing something. I like to tell myself that they'll only be 15 minutes but normally I take up to 30 minutes. Regardless of how long, I find that after a break I'm able to concentrate much more.

2. Make time for friends and family!

It's always good to make time for friends and family. Spending time with the people I love always puts me in a better mood, and I always feel carefree when doing so.

3. Treat yourself to junk food.

Whenever I accomplish something major, I like to treat myself to some junk food. I have found that it is important for me to reward myself some times. Regardless of how much work I still have to do, I like to treat myself for the work I have finished.

4. Exercise

Exercising always gets my mind off of all the things I have to do and makes me feel accomplished. Not only is it good for your health, it is something which can be done at any time of the day. Whether its jogging or visiting the gym, it has always been something that relieves my stress.

5. Rant To Friends

If something serious is on my mind, I find that it helps to talk to my friends about it. Not only am I able to express what I'm feeling, but it also allows me to get a second opinion on my problem. By the time I finish ranting with my friends, I normally feel better and have advice on how to deal with the issue.

6. Try to get more sleep.

With school and and extra activities it's hard to maintain a good sleeping schedule, but it's important to get enough sleep. I find that I work better after have taken a nap even if I have to stay up later, and I feel much better afterwards as well.

7. Stay Hydrated

Drinking water helps with a lot of things including boosting your energy. It also helps to get rid of acne and helps you to focus better. I like to drink water constantly throughout the day because staying hydrated makes me feel better.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.
