Pageant World

Every now in then I find myself structuring ways that I can step out of my comfort zone and experience personal growth.

Most recently, I did this through accepting the position as The Odyssey Editor In Chief for my community, Marshall University. However, back in October, I made a decision to immerse myself in a culture I had never even witnessed before: Pageant World.

It all started with a simple commercial. That commercial sparked something in me and from that point on I was determined to explore how young, empowered women competed for a coveted title that meant they were awarded the privilege to serve in once in a lifetime kind of way. "I wonder how people get to do that...", I had spoken to my father as I began searching the internet for an application process that I was sure to find just minutes later. As I read and scanned tons of articles and information about competing on the National level, I found that you had to first win your state pageant. I didn't think twice about requesting the information for the Miss West Virginia USA competition. Later, I received an email requesting more information about myself and photos too.

Weeks went by and I did not think much of it. On May 8th, while I was boarding a flight at O'Hare International Airport destined for LAX, my iPhone screen lit up; across my screen in bold font read, "CONGRATULATIONS!" I was granted the rare opportunity to compete for a title that so many desire to. That itself, was such anhonor.

So I began seeking out sponsors that would help fund my road to the crown. Once I had completed that portion and my spot was secure, I gathered all the clothing and items I needed that would aid me in success throughout the competition. (Who new a bathing suit could be so expensive!) After I had prepped my wardrobe and scheduled the appointments that were vital in ensuring that I felt confidently beautiful, it was a waiting game.

October 6th came and I was finally in route to Morgantown, WV to compete for Miss WV USA! When I registered I was able to meet all the amazing people that work for Pageant Associates that made the application process such a breeze for me, I seriously am so thankful for their kindness. The next morning, I arrived at WVU's Creative Arts Center feeling anxious, but ready. A long day of learning choreography, as well as the interview portion of the competition of course, lead the thirty-five young women into the preliminary competition later that night.

I strutted out onto a stage for the first time in my life and it came so natural to me. We competed in cocktail dresses, swimwear, and evening gown and the night was over. It all went by so fast! The next day, was the Final competition. They announced the Top 15 for Miss WV USA - I had made the cut. In that moment, I was astounded that I had reached my goal coming into the competition. Shortly, after they announced the Top 15 we recompeted in the same three categories once more. After that, they announced the Top 5 and I didn't make that cut, but what I quickly realized was that I had pushed myself in a way I never had before, and that filled me with great contentment.

If your still reading this, the best advice I could possibly give you is to take chances. You may be surprised by what you learn from them.

Be bold and step out in faith - you will not regret it.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
