For all that don't know, Stephen Colbert is an American comedian who currently hosts "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert," a late-night television talk show on CBS. Much of Colbert's content is based on his political opinions and his opinions are oftentimes a parody of current news. Many of Colbert's monologues are based on the news of the day; he often uses jokes to speak on heavy matters.
The biggest point in his monologues recently has been Trump's presidency. Ever since Election Day, Stephen Colbert has made multiple comments on the lack of commitment Trump will keep on his word. For his million campaign promises, Colbert spoke on the possibility for Trump to put many of his initiatives in place. In a way, he offers a sense of hope for many people who are not Trump supporters. Through his comedy, he allows people to feel better about many of the scary and life-threatening situations Trump’s executive orders put them in. Colbert brings in many real life executives to shed some light on many of the issues going on in the news, whether it be Trump-related or not. While many of Colbert’s jokes go over people’s heads, some catch the media’s eye and cause controversy.
Currently, Colbert is under fire for a joke that aired on Monday, May 1st, 2017. The joke went along like this, “The only thing [Trump’s] mouth is good for is being Vladimir Putin’s c–k holster.” Quickly people took to air to say that Colbert’s joke was homophobic and calls began for people to boycott the broadcast. While he apologized for his choice of words, he ultimately meant what he said, making this statement. “So while I would do it again, I would change a few words that were cruder than they needed to be,” Colbert said. “I’m not going to repeat the phrase, but I just want to say for the record, life is short, and anyone who expresses their love for another person, in their own way, is to me, an American hero. I think we can all agree on that. I hope even the president and I can agree on that. Nothing else. But that.”
As someone who is not a Trump supporter, I feel that Stephen Colbert had nothing to apologize for. Trump, who constantly says the rudest things and never apologizes, has no right to be offended. Our president, who on a daily basis offends anyone who is not a straight white male, does not deserve this amount of defense.
