The time has finally come. "Step Up: High Water's" first season is out on YouTube Red. The magic of the "Step Up" movies (see: the first illustrious pairing of Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan Tatum) is now being carried out in a new 2018-esque style series.
The "Step Up" movies, cult classics among dancers and "muggles," (a.k.a. non-dancers) featured phenomenally extra dance scenes with killer choreography and generic plot development. They have always featured some powerful stars, whether from the world of dance or from popular culture. Channing Tatum headed the first film in the installment, while "So You Think You Can Dance's" Kathryn McCormick dazzled in the fourth, and fantastic movers populated the movies in between.
Growing up as a dancer included countless sleepovers memorizing the choreography from the epic dance battles and car dancing scenes. The popularity of the movies also represented a larger trend: the growing popularity of dance in the mainstream. As evidenced by shows like "So You Think You Can Dance", "Dancing with the Stars", "Dance Moms", and "World of Dance", the enjoyment of this wild art form is beginning to become more universal. Today, the star-creating power of social media combines with these mainstream television shows to put dance and dancers in the spotlight.
These movies also created a celebration of dancers themselves, who often find themselves dancing backup. They also shone a (slightly romanticized) light on the struggles of achieving success in the grueling world of performance. On January 31st, this celebration and exploration continued. Based in Atlanta, it features Ne-Yo, YouTube-favorite Jade Chynoweth, a cast of insanely talented dancers from both Los Angeles and Atlanta, and a cameo appearance by tap legend Savion Glover.
The first four episodes are free on YouTube, and I am sure that it will be a dazzling treat. Stay tuned for my reviews of the upcoming season and check it out for yourself here.
