On Sunday, former public school teacher and "Grey's Anatomy" actor, Jesse Williams took the stage at the 2016 BET Awards to accept the honor for humanitarian of the year. Williams is also a board member of the Advancement Project which is a next generation, multi-racial civil rights organization. Rooted in the great human rights struggles for equality and justice, we exist to fulfill America's promise of a caring, inclusive and just democracy. We use innovative tools and strategies to strengthen social movements and achieve high impact policy change.
"We are going to have equal rights and justice in our own country or we will restructure their function and ours." Williams went on to say after paying homage to the unsung heroes in the crusade against systemic racism.
Williams made a tremendous number of great points throughout his speech on Sunday. Though the majority of his main ideas were about racism and what we, as African Americans, may face in America today. He also had several more great points as to why we, as African Americans, need to "Stay Woke" while living in America today.
We, as young African Americans, really need to stop branding and labeling ourselves. Our ancestors went through more than enough of that during the times of slavery. Not to say that having name brand clothes and labels are not nice to have. But the major point of Williams speech while saying this was that we are killing one another for clothes and other accessories that are not needed. Brand and labels do not make us who we are. Be advised, my brothers and sisters, as well as my fellow Americans, white and black— this is the time we must stand together and fight for what is right. Stay Woke.
