Hurricane season is no joke! Hurricane season begins May 15th and ends November 30th, but most of the storms will hit between the months of August and September. Regardless, it's something that should not be taken lightly.
Florida has had its fair share of hurricanes and there are several things that you can do to prepare for them. While they may be scary and unpredictable in a way, there are measures that can be taken in order to be safe! There are a lot of things that should be taken into account when preparing for this season but here are some steps that could help get you started.
Have battery powered flashlights.
Candles don't always provide a lot of light and flashlights are safer!
Stock up on non-perishable foods.
With hurricanes come power outages, which means no hot or cold food. Make sure you are stocked up on other foods in case of an emergency.
Aquire portable battery packs.
It's always nice to have an extra battery for phones, so keeping a couple of battery packs nearby will help assure you will have contact with the outside world.
Have a radio.
Having a radio will help with staying up to date on new information in case of lost signal or internet.
Protect your pets.
Make sure to care and protect your furry friends during this time, as they are probably confused, too!
Watch out for trees.
Tallahassee has a lot of canopy roads, which contain many older trees. While the initial hurricane may not knock down the tree, it may have weakened it, so be cautious of walking/ driving near trees like those.
Be prepared for evacuation.
If a storm is predicted to do serious damage, there may be a mandatory evacuation, so always stay informed and ready to evacuate if needed.
