Staying in Shape during the Winter

Because it’s cold outside and the gym never seemed so far.

Staying in Shape during the Winter

Warm weather brings an influx of the number of activities and adventures available to people. Staying active is an easier feat when a person can go for a hike or swim under the warming sun. As the days shorten and the temperature drops, I find it difficult to muster the motivation to make the quick journey to the gym. Its cold, its already dark, and I do not want to leave the comfort of my dorm room.

Certain additions to my normal routine, though, allow me to remain active without having to leave my room. For example, I stretch more. All the time really. It is an easy thing to do to keep your muscles loose and moving. I also drink twice the amount of water I normally do because when I am cooped up in the library or my dorm room, I tend to snack more. Drinking more water, I am less likely to be thinking about food.

According to Fitness Viking, exercising at home is one of the best ways to stay fit during the colder months. Instagram and YouTube are awesome tools to utilize when looking for workouts that can be done inside. Many fitness professionals and nutritionists have accounts on social media and offer free workout videos, schedules, or tutorials to help people stay, or start, being fit. Here are four of my personal favorite accounts.

1. Blogilates

Cassey Ho is a fitness genius with her own YouTube channel. She does a ton of videos and programs that are free on YouTube. Each video targets different areas of your body, and the videos range from three minutes to forty-five minutes. She talks about her nails and outfits a lot during some videos, which may seem annoying, but you eventually realize she is completely distracting you from the tough workout you are currently doing. Well played Cassey.

2. Home.Exercises

Home Exercises is an Instagram account that is specifically designed for people who can not frequently or conveniently make it to the gym. It incorporates walls, chairs, and even beds into different workouts that can be accomplished at home or in a dorm room. You can transition from exercise mode to nap time at a faster rate than ever before.

3. IVFitness

Idalis Velazquez is a fitness professional with an Instagram account that gives detailed workouts for every exercise she post. She does an array of different exercise routines, and for the warmer months, has running drills for those who has easy access to a track.

4. NatalieJillFit

Natalie Jill is a sports nutritionists with a ripped body and a fantastic Instagram account. She creates monthly workout schedules, which she will email to you for free. The are a mix of in-the-gym and out-of-the-gym drills, but most have at home supplements. Again, her stomach is unreal so it adds some motivation to your workout.

Each of these women offer beginner workouts as well as intense exercise routines for more experienced workout fanatics. Majority of the drills shown on these accounts are short, so they do not take up an obscene amount of time. Short, effective, and, more importantly, can be done without having to leave your warm room.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
