3 Ways You Can Stay Positive In A Negative World

Don't let current events drag you down.

In the last two years, people have frequently commented over social media how humanity is "doomed" and how everything seems to be going downhill. Lately, it seems to me like people have been subscribing to the theory that "no news is good news." The news, in general, has been a topic that has not been brought up in conversation alongside other topics such as politics and religions - simply as to not cause disagreements or discomfort.

Frankly, people often cite 'current affairs' as the reason that they are not happy or satisfied in their personal lives. As a result, I would like to compile a list of how to stay positive amidst negative environments or climates they may be facing.

1. Control the number of negative people in your life.

A purge of eliminating negative forces is a must - but it starts with people you may encounter in your personal or daily lives. Keep contact with such people at a bare minimum, and if possible alienate people whom you feel may not bring about happy or even positive feelings amongst you, your friend group, or even workplace. Taking a small step like this may help to clear your headspace.

2. Practice gratitude.

Simply put, complimenting or just verbally appreciating people in your lives who bring about happiness can change entire social atmospheres. It's cliche, but thinking positively may help bring about inner happiness, so maybe make it a point to verbally express positivity once a day to an external source. Simply helping others out - even when it comes to holding open a door, or something like purchasing a surprise gift for someone may be uplifting.

3. Disconnect.

As stated, the world we live in may produce negative feelings while one reads the news or people's opinions which foster nothing but cynicism. At times like this, it may be necessary to actively choose to disconnect from the internet, social media, or other external sources which cause this kind of outcome.

This time can be spent positively - by nurturing self-growth through meditation or engaging with close friends instead. While it is important to be informed, sometimes mindfully prioritizing personal positivity is required.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
