Stay in the Know on the 40 Acres

With new student media outlets popping up on UT's campus often these days, it can be tough to keep up. Check out this list of sources for UT-elxclusive news and stay in the know.

1) The Daily Texan: The oldest source of news at UT is its 115-year-old student newspaper, which can be found in print and online at DailyTexanonline.com.

2) The Horn: The Horn emerged roughly four years ago as another student newspaper at UT. It has quickly gained traction and can be found online at readthehorn.com.

3) KVR News: UT's student-run television station, better known as TSTV, features several news shows, with KVR digging hardest into the news affecting the UT community. You can catch it on TV in the dorms Monday nights at 9 p.m. and via livestream during that time at http://www.texasstudenttv.com/show/kvr-news. KVR also posts its weekly news casts on Youtube and its Twitter feed is a reliable source for up-to-date coverage of what's happening with UT.

4) Good Morning Texas (GMTX): Focusing on the lighter side of news, TSTV's GMTX program brings feature news content to campus Wednesdays at 8 a.m. and 11 a.m. It can be viewed on TV from the dorms and a livestream can be caught here: http://www.texasstudenttv.com/show/good-morning-texas. GMTX also posts its news casts to Youtube.

5) The Odyssey: If you're reading this, you no doubt know about UT's only news source exclusively focusing on Greek life. Up-to-date coverage for Greek life on the Texas campus can be found at www.theOdysseyOnline.com/Texas and the The Odyssey can be found in print each Wednesday at area Greek houses.

6) ORANGE Magazine: Starting just a few years ago, ORANGE Magazine has quickly established itself as a staple to the UT student news scene, bringing feature content that highlights some of the many cool efforts happening on the 40 Acres and around Austin. Its content can be found online at www.orangemagazine.co. The magazine also normally puts out one PDF issue each semester, a throwback to the semester-long class that it sprang out of that would publish one print issue each term.

With all these sources for UT news at your fingertips, there should be no excuse not to be caught up on the latest at UT. And with how quickly some of the news sources are growing and emerging, you might want to be on the lookout for the next great UT student news source.

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
