Spring break is that one week in the spring semester that every college student looks forward to. Whether you're going away or not, you can't wait until for the day when you can have a short break from all the stressful school work. And that's all it has to be: a break. There's some idea that spring break should be spent on a warm beach in a swimsuit with a drink in one hand and a selfie stick in the other. But this isn't ideal for everyone. Whether its the lack of time, money, or just simply not your cup of tea, spring break doesn't have to be spent on some exotic beach with alcohol and parties every night.
As a senior in college, this is my last spring break, and the first and last time I've decided to go away. No, not the beach, but D.C. to check out museums and take in the history. The last three years are very similar. Freshman year, I worked all of break and cashed out an extra three hundred bucks to pay the bills. Sophomore year, in between work days I took a day trip to the city to do some shopping. Junior year, in between work days I hung out with my friends, either at my house or out at dinner. Nothing big, fancy, or expensive. And I'm perfectly okay with that.
Everyone has their own reasons for not wanting to go away and do something big. Here are my top four:
1. This is your week to catch up
Spring break for someone may simply be a week of catching up on everything, whether it be sleep, homework, TV shows, or friends. A week off of school is the perfect time to sleep in when you've only gotten five hours of sleep a night, finally doing all that homework you've put off or couldn't keep up with, finally watching those six episodes of "Grey's Anatomy" that have been out since January, or simply making time to see the friends you haven't since winter break or beyond.
2. Maybe you're homesick
Maybe being away from home for nearly three months has left you feeling a bit homesick, craving your mother's cooking and even your dad's corny jokes. Spring break can be a week to simply spend time at home, to see your family, your hometown friends, your dog, your cat, your fish — whatever you've missed since January. Home is that lovely place where you can play with your pets, enjoy delicious home cooked meals instead of the dining hall food, lounge in your own living room freely, and sleep in your room, your bed, which is probably much more comfortable than the dorm mattresses. Going out and grabbing a bite to eat with the friends you haven't seen in while can be more valuable than some beach time.
3. You want to save money
Whether you work, do something small, or stay home, you'll still be saving a decent amount of money. Plane tickets alone can cost between $150-$500 depending on where you want to go. Add the cost of a hotel, food, drinks, possible souvenirs, etc., and you've got quite a bill. Instead, you could take day trips for $50, out to lunch for $25, go rollerblading for $12, spend some time in an arcade with whatever you want to spend, or even go hiking or biking for free. Or maybe you plan on staying inside and watching Netflix all week, which is basically free. Or this can be your week to rack up those hours at work and actually make money. Any way you go, it'll be a lot less than flying to a beach.
4. You want to just relax
After all, it is spring break. You, like every college student, probably need a well-deserved break. Whether it's because you're stressed, mentally exhausted, or simply overworked and tired, spring break can simply be laying on the couch and taking a breather. Three months of classes, homework, tests, studying, and essays can leave you wanting to simply get away from everything and do nothing at all. Taking a week off to simply gather all of your thoughts and energy back may be what you need to prepare yourself for the second half of the semester. Relax and prepare for success.
There are plenty of reasons why you may not want to go away to the beach for spring break, and you shouldn't have to feel like you're missing out simply because you didn't. Whatever you plan to do, just enjoy that to the max.
