What if I told you that there’s a pair of headphones that can make you a better athlete or more fit?
Thanks to a company called Halo Neuroscience, you can stimulate your brain in such a way that you can become the next Michael Phelps. Well not exactly, but it does improve your workouts and training, making your workout more worth your time.
Brain stimulation is a concept that seems overly medical, leaning towards mad scientist. However, Halo Neuroscience has made it as simple as wearing headphones that resemble Beats. These ordinary looking headphones send a minimal electric current to your brain’s motor cortex. Within your motor cortex are neurons that control your muscles. Sending a current to these neurons makes your brain better at transmitting commands to your muscles. According to Halo Neuroscience's website, it creates temporary state of hyper-learning for your brain that lasts for an hour. Halo Sport has already created hype in the professional athlete realm. Professional baseball, football, and basketball teams are already experimenting with it. Halo Neuroscience says that pairing this stimulation with physical training can give an athlete the winning edge in a world where sports are becoming more competitive than ever. They claim that the product can make people faster, stronger, and even better coordinated.
This may be sad to some, but unfortunately you can’t just slide on the Halo Sport while sitting on the couch and miraculously be able to shoot 3-pointers like Steph Curry. You must pair the stimulation with training. For example, wearing the Halo while practicing pitching will help reinforce the pathways and muscle memory. Halo also greatly improves effectiveness in your reps while lifting. Each rep while wearing Halo better activates muscle fibers, making that extra rep worth it.
When I workout, I don’t want to worry about my headphones being a nuisance. Halo Sport avoids being a nuisance by attaching its spongy electrodes to the band between the earphones. This naturally stimulates the motor cortex, which is a strip of brain tissue that arcs from ear to ear. Halo Neuroscience has made Halo Sport as easy to use as any Apple product. There’s just one button on it and is completely controlled by a smartphone app. You can control the stimulation level and duration as well as whether to stimulate the lower or upper body. The sensation of the stimulation has been described as a slight tingle under the pads but then eventually feels like you’re wearing any other headphones, Halo Sport even will play music. Don’t worry you can still rock out to the Weeknd’s new album while working out.
But is it safe?
Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is widely regarded as a way to aid depressed people. ECT uses a current of 800 or 900 milliamperes that flows through an individual’s head. This causes a seizure that serves as a neurological reset… which may seem a little scary but once again, is widely regarded as effective. In perspective, Halo Sport’s current never goes beyond 2 mps.
So it looks like the future does not lie in improving your physique, but your brain. Nerds rejoice!
