10 Things Every Incoming Freshman Can't Wait For
Ashley Keane

Growing up, I always heard different stories about college and what it would be like. I have so many expectations already in mind without even going there yet. High school was a lot of fun, but now it is time to move on to something new. Here is a list of different things people have mentioned to me over the years to make me excited to start college as soon as summer ends.

1. Meeting all the new people = friends galore!

Giphy

I consider myself a very social and outgoing individual. With this in mind, I know it will not be that difficult to meet new people. College gives you so many friends and resources that actually can make a huge difference in your life. I am excited just thinking of all the friends I will make even in the first few weeks!

2. I'll have a roommate to share all those wacky adventures.

Giphy

All the time I hear so many roommate stories both good and bad. I am looking forward to having someone constantly in my life who will most likely become one of my college besties. I just want someone to be always be there for me to share in fun times (and some rough times too). One of the only downsides is trying to make sure I keep my side of the room clean for both of our sakes!

3. Finally, I get more independence to start adulting.

Giphy

Every teenager looks forward to having more freedom and living on their own, but it can still be slightly scary to think about. I am looking forward to going through all those real-life struggles that come with growing older. Yes, I will not have it figured out. Yes, I will still have to turn to my parents to help me out sometimes. Yes, I still want that independence and freedom that comes with the full college experience.

4. My dorm decorating will be worthy of Pinterest itself.

Giphy

I am a pretty artsy individual especially when it comes to decorating things like my room. I mean coordinating colors from my bedsheets to my canvases and everything in between is so satisfying. I cannot wait to just let my inner DIY self thrive in college. Also if anyone needs styling tips for dorm rooms, I can definitely help with that possibly in a future post.

5. I could have the chance to meet my future spouse.

Giphy

The odds of meeting someone in college that mutually cares about me are pretty good. Mr. Right could be sitting behind me in my first math class for all I know. I am so ready to meet him, but first I have to actually go to college to possibly find him.

6. Get that Freshman 15 everyone talks about and then lose it again.

Giphy

I want to be able to eat so many different kinds of food even if that means having access to ice cream at all hours of the day. I know they always warn you that you will probably eat too much at first and gain a lot of weight, but I want to still be able to start that whole process. On another note, I am also pretty excited to start hitting the gym on a college campus for once; they always seem so huge and accommodating on all the tours.

7. Finally I can explore new places on my own.

Giphy

I cannot wait to just walk around campus taking in all the daily sights of it all. I want to walk to places off campus such as downtown areas and other cool places students go. This will all be a new experience for me, and I am excited to be able to do it on my own. At least I can take some friends with me on these trips as well.

8. I'm on my way to my future career.

Giphy

Throughout your life up to this point everyone just keeps asking you what you want to be in your future career. College is finally the huge launching point to decide that path for yourself. I can tell people my declared major and career choice, and I can relax knowing they are finally done asking. I also am excited because I am going to be one step closer to achieving my hopes to be a teacher.

9. I find where I fit in all over again.

Giphy

High school left me knowing a lot more about myself and how I fit in with different people. College is going to be just like starting over because I will have so many student organizations I can join. I am excited to learn all about those and to join the ones that interest me the most. I already know who I am, but I also want to know who my college self can become.

10. I'm finally starting the next chapter of my life.

Giphy

I am most excited to overall just starting the next part of my life. Wherever it takes me and whoever I meet will all work out well in the end. I am excited to start college because it means living in the now. I can let go of my past memories and move on to bigger and better things.

Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
