Start Your New Year Off Differently With These 5 Steps

It is the beginning of the New Year, it is time to start thinking of your New Years resolution. You could do the cliché ones, such as hit up the gym, save more money, and study more. But you, and everyone else, know that those will only last maybe a few months. This year how about make a resolution that will last all year long. Here are six resolutions that will last all year and will help better your life.

1. Smile

Smile once a day for a year straight. Even if you are having a bad day find sometime during that day to smile about. Smiling helps you think more positive, be more productive, and have a better attitude. So show that bright white smile everyday for a year and watch it work it's magic.

2. Say thank you

It is a proven face that those two simple words can fix most problems. In a relationship with your significant other, if you say thank you one time a day, even if it is just saying thank you for being you or thank you for cooking dinner. Saying thank you can save your relationship, it shows that you appreciate them. This works not only with your other half but with family and friends also, they want to know that you are thankful for them as well.

3. Give back

This doesn't have to be with money, it could be with time. Meaning instead of giving money to charity because we all know we are in college and we use every penny we have to just get by. Instead of giving the money we don't have, we could give our time with volunteering anywhere we have a passion for such as: a dog shelter, the soup kitchen, big brother big sister, anything that needs a little more help. This is a great way to give back in a way that you can afford and it makes you feel great about yourself.

4. Learn something new

Whether it is learning to knit or learning how to horse back ride. Take it in, learn with excitement, and have fun. Learning something new is good, it broadens your skill sets and shows you that you can learn anything you set your mind too.

5. Enjoy who you are

Stop trying to change yourself for others and just be happy. You are perfect just the way you are and you don't need to change to make anyone like you any differently.

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
