Instead of writing out a list of those ten typical New Years resolutions you'll never fulfill and forget about by the third week of January, try something new for your 2018 goals.
1. Try writing a letter to your future self.
Talk about where you are now, what you hope to achieve this year, what you want to improve on, and what you want to maintain. On January 1st, 2019, you'll see how much you really accomplished over the year. Try to make it a year full of successes more than defeats.

2. Establish monthly goals
Rather than establish a huge resolution that you'll tackle for the next 365 days, establish monthly goals for yourself. Maybe January will be the month you go to the gym before work three times a week. And February will be the month you tackle planning dinners ahead of time instead of eating out all the time.
3. Create a bucket list.
Whether that's trying a new food or traveling to a new city, jot down a few ideas you want to achieve or experience for the first time this year. There are many bucket list ideas online if you need a little extra help.
Don't look at everything as changing, but look at it like you are reaching mini goals. Take it step by step. The key to success is to come up with a measurable goal.

4. Have (or gain) a good and clear mindset!
Your mindset plays an important role in improving yourself. Instead of telling yourself you want to lose weight, maybe your goal is to treat food as nutrition rather than enjoyment. You might be surprised at how effective such a mindset can be!
When you only concentrate on the year ahead, you can forget what got you here in the first place. Spend some time processing all that happened this past year—the good, the bad, and everything in between. Refrain from dwelling on the negative memories, but rather respect that they are part of your journey and have helped you build the foundation for your future.

5. Schedule mini retreats !
Plan an event each season or every couple of months, make time for yourself, and spend a day or evening focused on YOU. It’s easy to get caught up in your busy schedule. Balancing work, family, friends, and other commitments can take up all of your time and energy, leaving little room for yourself. Don’t forget to plan them ahead so they don’t become another forgotten item on the to-do list.
6. Express gratitude.
It can help you maintain a fresh perspective and steer you away from daily stress. Remember to be thankful for everything you've been given and blessed with and do not take it for granted.

7. Create a list of things to look forward to!
What are you looking forward to this year? Maybe you have a great vacation planned, your next birthday is a big one, a friend is getting married, or there’s a workshop that you’re really looking forward to attending.
Instead of resolving to work on one specific aspect of yourself or your life, it might be helpful to choose one word that sums up how you want to feel in 2018. Maybe there's a word that sums up everything you want to improve yourself, like "thoughtful," "peaceful," or "helpful." Carry this word with you throughout the year and apply it to all your endeavors.
This year, try throwing resolutions out the window and make positive changes in a different kind of way!
