Watching the news lately, it is easy to feel down about what this world is coming to. It's as if every week there is some new breaking news about innocent people being shot. In response to this, it is difficult to not want to simply rant about how wrong all this is and what you think needs to be changed. I think it is becoming scary to all of us that it could be us tomorrow. Not only this, but if you put yourself in place of a family member of a victim for even a second, you will get fired up about things.
But stop yourself for just a minute and self observe. Ask yourself what you are doing to make this world a better place. Is it that you're ranting on twitter about how awful these shootings are? Is it that you're telling people what you think needs to be done in this country? If it's either of these things, great. It shows that you're caught up on what is going on in the world and you care about others. It shows you're knowledgeable and selfless - two awesome things to be. However, when you really stop and self observe, you might notice that both of these things really are not making a difference other than showing love and support for the victims. All in all, voicing an opinion when you are not a politician, really does not make a whole big difference on making this world better or worse.
So here's what I say to you. If you're fired up or saddened about what has happened, start making this world a better place; start with you. I am well aware that you, your small self, in this huge world, cannot do something to eliminate all shootings. However, you can make this world just a little better by simply making yourself just a little bit better.
Here's what I'm saying - when you're at Tim Hortons tomorrow morning, pay for the person behind you. When you see the old lady at the grocery store struggling, help her unload her groceries. Tip extra. Do good in the world. This will start making others happy - reminding people there is kindness left in the world. It will remind people that yes, maybe there are some terrible people in the world, but there are also great ones.
Everyone's life matters and we need to start showing everyone around us how much we truly care about them and their life, whether we know them or not. Take away the pain of the news for a while and show there is good left. Be the beautiful in the world; start with yourself and you too will realize how great our world can still be.
