So, January is upon us.
When anyone sees this, it will be after the new year.
Which means football season is almost over.
I don't mean just college teams waiting for the national championship, I'm also talking about regular season NFL.
I don't like the winter past December, and this is one of the reasons why I dread it.
Football for me is life. I love when August rolls around, because pre season games, college starting the week before NFL kicks off, and I can literally smell it in the air. It helps I live in the south, where football reigns king. It's December 28th, the day before I fly back to Tennessee, (which is early for me, considering I always go home on New Years Day, I'm super salty about it but that's another story). I am watching the Texas Bowl game while my best guy friend Spenc is passed out on my couch, and my boyfriend is sitting next to him with my mom's dogs, half asleep himself. I keep realizing that come Sunday, it will be week 17. The final regular season game.
What. The. Hell.
I live and breathe football. I grew up in a really small town, and that's basically all we had for entertainment on Friday nights, and I can't complain (duh). But, this is when I have to embrace that this shit sucks. After Sunday, what I call "the purge" will happen. I call it the "purge" because that's usually when all the coaches in the hot seat (and GMs) will be fired, and find new positions elsewhere. But this year, the purge has happened early. First Jeff Fisher for the Rams in the beginning of December, then Gus Bradley for the Jags, then yesterday being Rex Ryan and his brother, the defensive coordinator, Rob Ryan for the Buffalo Bills. Who else may you ask? Only Monday, January second, will tell. The purge is scary, because there is always that curve-ball that NOBODY- and I mean NOBODY- expects. Like a team that didn't do terrible but didn't do fantastic will fire their coach who hasn't even been there long. It makes me nervous, but, I cannot complain. It's pretty entertaining to watch, because all the teams that people thought would gut their system, did already before the regular season was over. It kind of makes sense, since teams who haven't seen playoff chances are now clinching divisions and wild card spots. (Only six teams from the NFC and AFC make the playoffs.) Sunday will only determine for either the Redskins or the Packers, and that's about it.
This is the start of my winter sadness, because then once the Super Bowl comes and goes, there's nothing going on until April. All there is Basketball, Hockey and then March Madness comes around, but I really only deeply follow football and baseball.
Basis of the story? Winter sucks, and no football for the rest of the winter sucks even more.
