London. Where to begin? As an American studying in Italy where carbohydrates are the main food group and American coffee does not exist, the UK was a refreshing taste of home, quite literally. I nearly drooled at the sight of the Starbucks logo. Okay, that's a bit of an exaggeration, but really, it was needed after a month of "one-sip" espresso shots and "large" cappuccino's that would pass as a mini at home. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE Italy and my home in Florence, but a little familiarity was much appreciated.
The city of London resembles American cities in its modernity but is bursting with ancient history and amazing sights around every corner. There is the Big Ben, Tower of London, Buckingham Palace, London Eye, and many more monuments to marvel at. Of course these tourist sights sit in the bustling center of the city, but the outskirts and small towns surrounding London are well worth a visit. A weekend is not nearly enough time to explore all that England has to offer, but any time spent there will not disappoint, even if it rains!
I highly recommend taking a ride on the London Eye, as it provides an amazing 360, panoramic view of the city. The Shard, Big Ben, Buckingham Palace, London Bridge, Tower Bridge, and the Tower of London are just a few of the monumental sights you can see while riding.
The double decker bus tours are also worth your time, as they provide historical facts to accompany the monuments as you pass them. If you're lucky and the weather cooperates, the open-air top deck is the place to be!
There is also Covent Gardens which, for the Northeasterners out there, resembles Faneuil Hall in Boston. It is a half open-air, half inside hall lined with stores, restaurants, and cafes. It is always teeming with people, and there is often people singing or playing instruments, which makes for the perfect spot to take a break and enjoy some quality entertainment with a drink.
While the grand monuments are obviously a must-see, you simply cannot go to London without riding in a Black cab or taking a photo with an authentic red telephone booth. These embody British culture in its most basic and historical sense.
London is a city that should be on everyone's bucket list. The sights are simply incredible and the atmosphere is nothing short of welcoming. I am lucky enough to have family in this wonderful city and know that I will be returning someday. Until next time, cheerio London!
