One of my favorite things about spring is the flowers, each with their own stunning shapes, smells, and bright colors. Their beauty brightens my day. This past earth day I spent time outside in the park walking around and enjoying nature. Every time I enjoy nature long enough, I notice something new, a new color, a new flower, bug, or bird I had not noticed before.
When I spot something interesting I take a picture, it’s too beautiful, I can’t resist. Nature’s beauties are too wonderful for me to keep to myself so I thought I would share some of them with you and brighten your day as well. Happy belated earth day, well earth day is every day, so enjoy nature and let it brighten your day.
1. Crocus
One of the first flowers to show up in the spring. I spotted them in my parent's yard a month ago. I love the stripes of purple and the vibrant green stems and leaves with bright white petals and a yellow center. These flowers are not the biggest but they contrast the still brown grass and leaves surrounding them, one of the first signs of life after the long harsh winter. I was excited when I walked out of the house one day to see these in the yard, one of the first flowers of the year, they certainly made my day.
2. Lesser Celandine
These are what I like to call, happy little woodland flowers. They grow in clusters in semi-lit, damp woodlands. They are common near the creeks where I walk in Pennsylvania and apparently have been used for centuries to treat liver disease, who would have thought! Their bright flowers open to the sun and carpet the ground, It is a stunning sight to see a large cluster of these, they are magical, like something out of a fairytale.
3. Forsythia
A stunning bright yellow flowering bush. This is a favorite flowering bush for people to have in their yards and I can see why. It's stunning. In April or May, these bushes are covered completely with these vibrant yellow blooms. It's like sunshine on a bush.
4. Daffodil
You really begin to feel like it's spring when daffodils are blooming everywhere. Enjoy these beautiful blooms I saw.
5. Grape Hyacinth
I love these little purple cone-like flowers that carpet the ground. When I saw the beautiful purple from a distance I had to get a closer look. You can enjoy them best when you bend down to their level and get a closer look. Don't underestimate the little flowers, sometimes they are the most unique, most stunning flowers.
6. Tulip
I saw this lone tulip the other day and it caught my eye. It was the first tulip I saw this year. They come in many colors but I love the simplicity of this one, white with a yellow stripe down each petal.
7. Virginia Bluebells
I love these unique wildflowers. Their pink blossoms open into a beautiful bell-shaped flower. This was one of my first times seeing this flower and they caught my eye as they hung over the stream.
8. PrimroseI had heard of primrose from Hunger Games, Katniss sister is named after the flower, but I had no clue what it looked like. Without knowing what kind it was, these flowers caught my eye in the garden. Each bloom was so close together that it formed a ball of flowers. Later I realized this beautiful flower was a primrose, and it's more beautiful than ever, I'll have to grow my own someday.
9. Magnolia Stellata
One of my favorite flowers every spring is the magnolia. They have a wonderful sweet smell and soft velvety petals. It was hard to leave this tree it smelled so good!
10. Puschkinia (Striped Squill)
These little flowers remind me of stars and I was happy to discover them with their bright white and blue striped petals.
These are some of the beautiful flowers I have spotted so far this spring. Some are my longtime favorites that I look forward to every year, others are ones that I only recently noticed. It's amazing the beautiful and remarkable things you will discover when you wander outside. I hope these flowers brightened your day like they did mine. Enjoy your spring and don't forget to notice all the remarkable flowers.
