So your plans to go to Cancun for the week fell through, and now you’re going to be stuck in your hometown for spring break. You could sleep 20 hours a day and waste your time, or you could do something inspiring, novel, or productive.
Need some ideas? Read on.
1. Hang out with friends from high school.
Especially if you’re a freshman, you probably have friends who are still seniors in high school. Now’s the time to catch up with them and tell them how much better college is.
2. Shift your sleep schedule.
If you’re staying up till 2 or 3 a.m. on the daily, it might be time to shift back a little bit. Spring break is the best time to do this. Set alarms early in the morning and gradually start going to sleep earlier. It’s not the most fun thing you could do over break, but you’ll thank yourself during finals week.
3. Binge watch something.
Netflix is always a great way to pass the time when you can’t think of anything else to do. My personal favorites are "Criminal Minds," "Orange Is The New Black," "Breaking Bad," and "The Fosters."
4. Go to the library.
Find a book on something you’re curious about. Don’t feel like you have to read the whole thing if you’re burnt out from all your required reading. Just skim what you like and put it back on the shelf if you get bored.
5. Get some fresh air.
You have the rest of the semester to sit inside during classes. Use your free time to sit outside and enjoy yourself. Listen to music, read a book, or paint your nails in the sunshine.
6. Work.
Grab a few extra bucks while you can. Many people go back to the same place they worked at the previous summers because they’re still in the company database.
7. Go shopping on a budget.
Target is a pretty affordable place to get a lot of cute stuff. If you want to go even cheaper, try a thrift store or even a yard sale if you spot one.
8. Ride your bike or go for a run.
You don’t have to be sedentary — remember, seven days without exercise makes one weak. Believe me, you’ll thank yourself for taking care of yourself. If you start eating healthy foods, that’s double the benefit!
10. Work on your personal development.
Start identifying unhealthy habits you have, physical or emotional, and come up with a realistic game plan for changing them. Remember to start small so you don’t get overwhelmed and give up.
11. Take a bath.
I can’t tell you how much I miss having a nice bubble bath. If you live in a dorm, you won’t have a roomy bathtub to relax in, so take advantage of that luxury if you have one at home.
12. Start planning for summer.
Maybe that Cancun trip can happen; you just have to wait a few more months!
It might not be as fun as going to the beach, but a spring break at home doesn’t have to entirely suck. Make the best of your time off and do something you can’t do at school!
