We're in the homestretch, everyone, and the final few weeks of the school year are wrapping up! What does that mean? That everyone's heading outside, soaking up the sun, and chilling on the green with friends before everyone leaves campus for the summer! What to listen to while relaxing in the sun? Read on to find out seven of the best songs for Spring '17!
1. Waitress Song, First Aid Kit. First Aid Kit, which is a Swedish sister duo that primarily sings folk and indie inspired music, is simply amazing (maybe I'm biased, though, because I'm obsessed with their latest album, "Stay Gold"). Nonetheless, their song, "Waitress Song," is an awesome jam for the spring and warmer weather with its upbeat rhythm and pensive, thoughtful lyrics. Check it out, and while you're at it, you can consider checking out the rest of "Stay Gold," too because songs like "Silver Lining," and "Cedar Lane" are beautiful and thought-provoking tunes.
2. Stop this Train, John Mayer. Mayer is known for his easy-to-listen-to music, and this song is pretty much the pinnacle of that. The song reveals Mayer's reaction to his realization that he's getting older and really coming to terms with the fact that life stops for no one. This song features several gripping lyrics, such as "So scared of getting older//I'm only good at being young," and "Don't stop this train//Don't for a minute change the place you're in" when Mayer realizes that he needs to put his regrets behind him and live for now. It's a beautiful song, and doesn't have too much instrumental background, it's easy to chill out with and relax to.
3. New Man, Ed Sheeran. Ed Sheeran's new album, "Divide" was incredibly popular the moment it debuted, and with good reason: the album is good. New Man is one of my personal favorites; it's honest, it's a little snarky, it makes you laugh. Check it out.
4. Passionfruit, Drake. I'm in love with this song. It's very different than the other three songs listed above, but it's just as incredible. This song essentially is a narrative of Drake's struggle to hold a long-distance relationship together, especially his difficulty to maintain trust in this particular relationship, according to Genius. The beat is incredibly catchy; you have to listen to it for yourself because it's unlike anything else. Genius goes on to state that the song has "tropical/dancehall influences" which have been utilized in other Drake hits such as "Hotline Bling" from his album "Views." This song does have explicit language in it, but it's so so so good.
5. Take Care, Beach House. This song is beautiful. The premise of the song is pretty interesting. When I first listened to it I thought that the singer was promising to take care of a loved one, or perhaps making a promise to her younger self to do well for herself. Nonetheless, the lyrics are pretty, and the song feels like sunshine and spring. It's very indie, and has a dreamy feel. A unique song, for sure.
6. Something Just Like This, The Chainsmokers and Coldplay. I'm a big fan of the Chainsmokers, and this song may not have the same feel as Bouquet (2015) or their other albums, but this song is just as incredible in other ways. It's simple, and Coldplay's involvement in it makes it all the better. This song is a step back from their usual dance-sounding music, and is essentially saying that the singer doesn't want a relationship with a perfect, super-human person, just an ordinary person that he can love and appreciate, flaws and all. The message is pretty neat, and the song is, too.
7. Island In The Sun, Weezer. The ultimate spring-summer song! I love everything about it. It just exudes summer-is-coming vibes, and is perfect to chill out to after a long day in the library spent studying for finals. It's relaxed, happy, and carefree. Just like spring should be. Not to mention it has some rock-influences, but if you want to listen to a less-frills version, there are plenty of acoustic renditions that are just as awesome.
Happy listening, and happy spring!!
