1. Everybody Wants to Rule the World- Tears for Fears
This is just a classic, you can't really go wrong with Tears for Fears. And this song encapsulates the 80's perfectly: talking about death, destruction, and futility under a cover of upbeat tempo and melody.
2. Come On Eileen- Dexys Midnight Runners
I like to workout to this song, specifically because it gets faster and faster. But another classic of the 80's, and a good song to keep you in high spirits.
3. The Boys of Summer- Don Henley
Henley is actually the lead singer for the Eagles, which is probably the main reason I love this song so much. But it's just kind of a vibe, sorry for the slang, but there's no other way to put it.
My Life- Billy Joel
Technically this song came out in 1978, but it's self-assuring. If you're ever in doubt, always remember that it's "your life", as Billy Joel famously sings.
Jessie's Girl- Rick Springfield
If you pay close attention, the lyrics kind of suck. So, I just don't, and the song is an instant bop!
Summer of '69
Contrary to popular belief, this song came out in 1984. The '69 may be another reference that I'm not willing to discuss.. nevertheless, the song screams good vibes and happy memories for you to jam out to.
Where the Streets Have No Name- U2
A little less upbeat, this is another great number for a chiller time.
Dancing in the Dark- Bruce Springsteen
This one's a no brainer. Whether it's the happy go lucky tone of the song, or the awesome music video of Bruce dancing with the soon-to-be Monica (Courtney Cox), this one definitely makes the cut.
Take On Me- a-ha
You can't say you weren't expecting this one.
Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic- The Police
This one's just a catchy number, and I am a huge police fan, so it's an instant bop.
We're Not Gonna Take It- Twisted Sister
If you're ever feeling rebellious...
Africa- TOTO
You can't say that at least once you haven't belted this song out very off-key. Maybe that's just me? Oh well.
Wake Me Up Before you Go-Go- Wham!
This just has good vibes and positivity written all over it.
Eye of the Tiger- Survivor
Another one to get you in the productive mode
Don't Stop Me Now- Queen
Again, this one is 1978. But it's so catchy and positive. Plus, are you really gonna complain with more Queen in your playlist?
Still of the Night- Whitesnake
This one's lesser known, but if you haven't, give it a chance. I live for the transition from rock to intense melody in the middle.
You Give Love A Bad Name- Bon Jovi
If any of you have watched "How I Met Your Mother", you'll know that this song is "all rise", according to Barney Stinson. Therefore, it makes the cut.
Break My Stride- Matthew Wilder
You may have heard this one on TikTok, but I assure you the song was great long before the app came along.
I Wanna Dance With Somebody- Whitney Houston
Don't we all, Whitney?
Billie Jean- Michael Jackson
You know this playlist would be missing something if it didn't have Michael Jackson in it.
Well, that's all I can think of for the moment. Maybe I'll edit this again, or put out an extended version. But for now, rock on my fellow hipsters!
