As I mentioned in my review of The Bad Beginning, it's been a long time since I first read these - I'm doing a review now because I didn't the first time and I can't really remember how I felt.
Firstly, I absolutely loved Monty. I think he would have been the perfect long term guardian, but of course that didn't work out. I loved how Monty treated the children like adults and included them in their research. It would have been amazing to see them in Peru, and honestly I was so upset when Monty died.
The way Violet figured out the murder weapon was really amazing. The children are so clever it almost makes me proud of them like they're my children! I'm jealous as to how Klaus can remember so much about what he's read. Even though these are children's books, they taught me a few words!
I have to say Stephano is one of my favourite disguises of Count Olaf. Not really to do with the books, but Neil Patrick Harris's portrayal of Stephano is so hilarious! I loved Monty but I expected him to recognise Stephano, and not think he was a spy for the herpetological society. However, if that happened there would be no story so it did make sense.
What I really got from this book was the urge to know more about Monty's past and how he knew the Baudelaire parents. The mystery is frustrating, but necessary.
Overall, I really did enjoy this book the second time around. I'd say my judgement is a bit clouded due to having seen the movie and the TV show prior to reading it again, but I did love it and I flew through it! I love how short these books are while still being long enough to tell the story. I gave this book 4.5 stars!
