At Villanova University, Special Olympics Fall Festival remains at the absolute core of student life. Every November, Villanova hosts the largest student-run Special Olympics program in the world, and I can confirm that it was absolutely amazing.
As a freshman, I was selected to serve as a Local Program Host (LPH), and I can honestly state that this was the most heartwarming experience of my entire life. When I first heard about the position of an LPH, I became immediately fixated on the thought of fostering a positive public attitude towards a population that is too frequently neglected. Before Fall Fest, various SpO coordinators had been talking about their experiences during Fall Fest, and their genuine love and enthusiasm for this cause was absolutely infectious. From that moment, I knew that I wanted to become a contributing aspect of such a welcoming, passionate community.
I can wholeheartedly state that being an LPH was the most gratifying experience of my life. Witnessing the enthusiasm, dedication, and positivity from these athletes was nothing short of inspiring. These individuals are absolutely incredible, and I feel so blessed to have connected with them on such a personal level. Throughout every competition, spirit line, spontaneous dance party, and cheering huddle, every participant could not help but feel impacted by the electrifying energy of the event.
As stated by Dustin Plunkett, "I think everyone should volunteer for Special Olympics because if you give an athlete one minute of your time, they'll give you their heart." I am forever grateful to have had this experience, and it will continue to impact me for the rest of my life.
It may have been below 20 degrees throughout the weekend, but my soul has never felt more warm.
