Actresses have been coming forward with their accounts of how Harvey Weinstein, the American film producer, sexually harassed them. However, there have been few responses from the men of Hollywood about the allegations.
Gwyneth Paltrow revealed that when she was 22 years old, Weinstein sexually harassed her in his hotel suite prior to the shooting for the movie "Emma", which he had cast Paltrow for as the lead. She recounted that he had put his hands on her and tried to get her to go to his bedroom for massages, but Paltrow refused. She told Brad Pitt, her then-boyfriend, about the unwanted advances, and then Pitt confronted Weinstein about it and told him to never lay a hand on Paltrow again. This led to Weinstein screaming at her for telling Pitt about the sexual harassment and Paltrow fearing that she would lose her role.
She was put in an unfair situation: having to choose between her career and her well being. Paltrow stated that she "was expected to keep the secret" about Weinstein. Being cast in "Emma" was Paltrow's big break that would catapult her into fame, but she should not have been forced to pretend that the encounter she had with Weinstein did not happen in order for her to protect her job.
It is unfortunately common for women to be sexually harassed and assaulted by their co-stars and their superiors in the movie industry, but it is always the same cycle of women sharing their stories and supporting one another, and men staying silent on the issue. All of the men of Hollywood, especially those who have worked with Weinstein in the past, should be denouncing his actions and helping spread the stories of the women that have shared their experiences. However, there is also more to be done than just typing a Tweet of support. The men of Hollywood must hold each other accountable for the rape culture that allowed Weinstein to believe that he was justified in making sexual advances towards the women in his films simply because he gave them a job. If men see other men making sexist comments, objectifying a woman's body, or any other action that perpetuates rape culture, they need to make it known that they will not tolerate that kind of behavior. They should also decide to not work with anybody that helps the oppression of women.
Men that do decide to speak out against Weinstein and other people like him also need to stop using the phrase "as the father of four daughters". When Matt Damon made a comment about Weinstein, he said :
"Look, even before I was famous, I didn't abide this kind of behavior. But now, as the father of four daughters, this is the kind of sexual predation that keeps me up at night. This is the great fear for all of us."
He may have had good intentions with making this comment, but by saying that he only felt horrified and disgusted by sexual assault after he had daughters shows that he only cares about the wellbeing of women once they have a direct impact on his life. Even if he had never had any daughters, he still should be supporting and fighting for the women that have been sexually assaulted because they are human beings.
To all of the men of Hollywood: demand that your industry respect women and allow them to focus on their craft without having to worry about being potentially sexually harassed by someone they are working with.
