It's 2019. The amount of hate, prejudice and injustice in this world is absolutely repulsive. Sometimes, we as a society turn a blind eye to it all because we don't experience it in our everyday lives. It is okay to be appreciative and feel blessed that you do not have to deal with these sorts of things in your own life, but that doesn't mean you should neglect that there are problems in the world we live in.
Race, sexuality, immigration, gender-- the list can go on and on about all of the issues that surround this nation. If you don't fall into one of the many categories that deal with prejudice and oppression- why are you not using your power and voice for good?
Your upper hand in society may not seem much to you. You may not think that you have the upper hand because of your ethnic background or your sexuality. Politically, you do. You have the power to make a difference in the lives of a big group of individuals. Think about the start of our great nation. The Constitution begins by saying "We the People". When it was written in 1787-- the "people" referred only to white men who owned land. We only granted them rights. As a nation, we have come far since then, but not far enough to our standards of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
Put your own prejudice aside. People are being denied basic human rights. Regardless of race, sexuality, gender or age-- these people deserve the same rights. We cannot reach the higher issues on the political agenda until we have equal rights for EVERYONE.
So please, do what you have the power to do. Use your voice and speak out for those who slip the mind of politicians when making new legislation. Whether you agree with the end goal they support, they still do not deserve to be neglected of basic human rights.
