Southern Family Gift Guide

Good gift giving is quite a skill, one that I can't say I have mastered. But during the most magical time of the year, just know that it is the thought and the effort that counts. Find gifts for those Southern family members that you think they will never forget, whether they are useful, sentimental, or just fit them. Gift ideas for your Southern

Grandpa

Your beloved grandfather probably has that one hobby or collection he loves and devotes some of his time to, so buy him something that goes along with it (like these personalized golf ball for the grandpa who loves golf). Or since men love to be known for their grilling skills, buy them a grilling crate (you can buy one online here here).

Grandma

We all know that our Southern cookin grandmas love their kitchen, so why not get them something to help them make your favorite meals? Buy them something special and practical or copper measuring cups or spoon like the ones found at Williams-Sonoma or a personalized salad bowl and tongs (you can find some here).

Dad

Your old man is usually a hard one to buy for, so when all else fails, buy him something you know he will use. This might be a new button up for church on Sunday (I suggest shopping at outlet stores like Ralph Lauren or GAP to find one in high quality that is not overpriced) or for an inexpensive and necessary gift, get him a year-long subscription to the Dollar Shave Club (sign him up online here).

Mom

You want to give your mom something as special as she is, and one thing is to give her the day off from her busy life; get her a gift card to a spa or a gift card for a massage (there are many chain massage places where you can buy this or even find a local resort and spa that you know your mom would love to visit). You know you love your mom's food (especially once you go off to college!) so why not also get her something personalized for her kitchen? You can find an engraved cutting board here.

Brother

Brothers love collecting college or professional sportswear so buy them that new sweatshirt or hat that they have been eyeing (this gift is easy to find at any sporting goods store). If they already have enough sportswear, then give them the chance to wear that gear to a game (order them tickets to a game and put them in their stocking this year).

Sister

Southern sisters love their monograms, so buy them something adorable (like this adorable hand painted Lilly Pulitzer monogrammed ornament or this Lilly Pulitzer MacBook skin. For that trendy sister who loves beauty and style products, buy her a monthly subscription Birchbox (sign her up online here).

Best Friend

We all have that friend who acts like they are a part of the family. These gift ideas are easy because you know that the two of you like many of the same things. Buy her a year-long subscription to Spotify Premium. You can buy online here for all of her late night dorm jam needs and road trips. Or fix her a collage gift bag full of things she wants and needs (like a CFA gift card, Starbucks gift card, razor blades, laundry detergent, a loofah, and that lipstick she has been dying to have).

These are just ideas that may or may not fit your family, but hopefully, from this list, you found some inspiration for all of your shopping needs before the 25th!

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
