Sports are a great topic of discussion. They are a great way to bond with others. Most nights of the week, there is usually at least one sports game on television to choose from. Don't get me wrong; I don't hate sports. I played several sports in high school, I love the camaraderie that sports bring.
In terms of professional sports, I just haven’t kept up with it. There are so many different sports and teams. Personally, I can’t even wrap my head around how people have time to keep up with just one team. This month, everyone was talking about the Super Bowl. Until the day of, I had no idea which teams were participating or where it was being played.
I always feel a little uncomfortable when people try to talk sports with me. I know it comes from a good place; they are just trying to be friendly and make conversation. I do best to relate using what little knowledge I have of sports. I usually just nod and smile to go along with what they are saying.
Sports fans come in all genders and sexual orientations. A good friend of mine, who happens to be a gay man, used to have a Super Bowl Birthday Party, since his birthday always landed the week of the Super Bowl. Being a lesbian, who dressed slightly more masculine than feminine; when people first meet me, they tend to make a lot of assumptions about my interests. Sorry, I don't follow sports. I actually spend my nights watching romantic comedies and teen dramas; I may or may not have a countdown for when Pretty Little Liars returns.
