Sorry To Burst Your Bubble, Conservatives, But Biology Isn't Up For Debate

Since you're so worried about being scientifically accurate, what about global warming, vaccines, and evolution?

A few weeks ago, Odyssey shared an article called, "Sorry To Burst Your Bubble, Liberals, But Biology Isn't Up For Debate." As a biology student, Christian, and liberal, this article bothered me on so many levels. While I do agree that scientific facts are indeed facts, I feel this statement should be directed at Conservatives rather than Liberals.

This article was written in reaction to another article titled, "PLEASE, Stop Throwing Gender Reveal Parties For Your Kid," which the author condescendingly claimed to have made her "laugh pretty damn hard." While I don't personally have an issue with gender reveal parties, because the gender a baby is born with is most likely the gender they will be throughout their entire life, the author states that scientifically, there are only two genders, which I do have an issue with.

What she may have meant to say is that biologically there are two sexes: male and female. But what a lot of people don't realize is there is a difference between sex and gender. Sex is only one aspect of gender. Studies show that there are four parts that make up a person's gender. Biological sex refers to the organs, hormones, and chromosomes a person possesses.

In fact, in some rare genetic disorders, people are born with sex chromosomes other than the traditional XX or XY, and some people are naturally born with both sets of parts. Before bashing anyone for being who they are, think of these people and their parents, who naturally don't have it as simple as everyone else and who do have to choose between being a male or being a female.

Studies show that the concept of gender is more of a spectrum than completely male or completely female. Along with just the biological parts, a person's gender identity, orientation and expression make up their gender as a whole. Gender identity is how a person sees themselves, as well as their chemical makeup (hormones in the brain, if that's not scientific enough for you, please let me know). Orientation is who someone is spiritually, physically and emotionally attracted to based on that person's gender. Expression refers to how one expresses his or her gender based on traditional gender roles through the way they look and act.

PLEASE tell me more about how much Conservatives care about being scientifically accurate when they think they can just choose to disregard things like evolution, vaccines and global warming, all of which have been scientifically proven.

Climate change has been proven by credible sources like NASA and The National Geographic. Even if you choose not to believe in it, guess what? You still live on planet earth and it still affects you! Instead of disregarding this issue that we as a human race created, not only liberals or only conservatives, we must make a change to save our planet.

Read the internet. Read science, for goodness sake.

Before claiming that liberals are "uneducated" and "they refuse to let any belief other than their own be accepted," take a look at yourself and your beliefs. You don't have to accept liberal beliefs, but if you accepted people as they are, the world would be a better place.

Why does it matter to you if someone is gay, transgender, or even if a little boy wants to play with dolls? It shouldn't. It literally does not hurt you in any way. So why not let people live their lives the way they want to and express the way they see themselves?

Biology isn't up for debate. While you are free to have your own beliefs, don't shame mine for being "biologically inaccurate" when your beliefs ignore scientific facts.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
