Sororities Are Actually Genuine AF

They are nothing like the movies portray them to be.

Media gives Greek life a pretty bad rep, especially sororities. But having recently joined one, it’s nothing like the cliché stories you hear about in movies. Contrary to popular belief, partying is only an extremely small portion of what each house does. Women in my house are some of the most empowering women I’ve ever met. I'm talking non-surface good quality character. Here are four big things that make sororities a group of extra genuine girls.

1. They raise a sh*t ton of money for great causes

Whether it be children’s hospitals, women’s health, or the blind, each sorority has a philanthropy that they hold events for in order to raise money. Each member is passionate about their cause and will go the extra mile to contribute. It’s pretty freakin’ awesome.

2. They empower women, not tear them down

Despite the stereotypes saying that they all about ‘slutty Halloween costumes’ and ‘petty cliques’, these girls are all about empowering not only themselves but each other as well. They hold the upmost respect for each other and push them to be their best. People may say it’s like high school all over again, but it is so much more. These girls would never try to tear you down, only lift you up.

3. They support each other academically

Whether it be changing you major or staying in to study for a test, sisters have no problem skipping a party to feed you flashcards. I thought it would be hard to keep up my grades while being in a house, but the girls are so focused on grades. If you’ve done badly on a test, there will always be someone to boost you back up, or help you ace the next one. Many girls in the house hold leadership positions not only in the house but also around campus.

4. Actual lifelong friendships

In high school, you think your friends will be there for your whole life, but coming to college, you realize the falsity in that. Having the option of meeting so many different people brings you to realize what really matters in life and friendships. Being in a Greek house means you do have friends for life. You now have bridesmaids, people to celebrate not just your birthdays but proposals, successful job interviews, all the important milestones and more.

The stereotypes given by movies and media has been tossed if you’ve ever been in a house. If you haven’t, you may think it’s all about social outings and cheesy pictures. It’s much more than that though. Greek life is philanthropic, uplifting, supportive, promising, and so so amazing! Don’t bash it ‘til you try it.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
