Nowadays it's rare to go a full day without some sort of major headline. Some days it's tragic and serious like Manchester.
Other days it's silly and less alarming; like the allusive 'covfefe'. Recently, Kathy Griffin took the spotlight by releasing a photo of herself holding a bloody replica of Donald Trump's beheaded head. It’s impossible not to have an emotional reaction upon seeing this disturbing image. Nearly everyone agrees that she was in the wrong. I mean seriously, what kind of reaction did she think she was going to get? Did she really have some sort of hope that people would rally around her and praise her for this image? Perhaps she did. It’s possible that she assumed her history as an abrasive, line crossing comic would grant her immunity to do something like this without much backlash.
Clearly, she was wrong.
Outrage from Trump lovers and haters alike has swarmed her, leading to her being dropped from business deals, including her annual gig with CNN hosting New Years’ Eve. But, where was this outrage when President Obama received similar treatment? In fact, Donald Trump himself was behind some of Obama’s greatest criticisms. Donald Trump is one of the biggest cyber bullies the world has ever seen—and he’s our president. Hypocrisy is an ancient concept, and it’s certainly a recurring theme in the new administration. Kathy Griffin went too far. But, she ultimately only hurt herself. You’d have to be completely insane to think she was trying to impose any serious threat on the president. Even though that does not change how severely disturbing and wrong the image was, the attention it received was disproportionate to what it deserved.
Truthfully, that may have been her hope all along. Like they say, there’s no such thing as bad press. She certainly got people talking about her again! All in all, she made an enormous mistake and only in time will we see if the world forgives her. But, let’s hold everyone to one standard. Especially those in power. Like, leader of the free world level of power. Respect people. Never turn to violence as an answer. Don’t condemn someone for something and then tweet—I mean turn around and do the exact same thing. Own up to your mistakes.
These people are adults aren't they?
