We all need advice every once in a while.

Some Advice For Myself
Alaina Pierson

This week I decided to write some kind words for myself. If I'm feeling down and that the entire world is crumbling around me, I can look back on this article and remind myself that everything will be okay. For those who are reading this, I hope these words of advice benefit you as well. We may as well help each other because it makes the world a better place.

First off, everything will be fine. That exam that you failed, or that relationship that didn't work out, don't matter in the grand scheme of things. Sure, it sucks in the heat of the moment, but bad experiences only make you stronger. You shouldn't spend every waking minute worrying because it will lead to regret.

Second, let loose. Being too reserved can hold you back from a realm filled with happiness and risky memories. You're only young once, so you may as well have a pleasant time. Talk to that guy, be friends with that person, buy that outfit, turn your hair a crazy color or cut it. Why? Because why not. Don't second guess a decision that could aid in your self-confidence.

Third, stop being so hard on yourself. You work so hard to achieve "perfection": the horrible news is that perfection doesn't exist, and is unattainable. You're doing great things, you're a kind soul, and you're amazing. Your expectations for yourself are so high - lower them. If you stop being hard on yourself, the rest will unravel how you want it as you go. You spend the most time with yourself, so you need to be as kind to yourself as you are to others.

Fourth, people love you for you. Who cares if you don't look or act like everyone else. Who cares if you're a late bloomer with a touch of naiveness. You're not supposed to be like everyone else because you are different. You're unique, and so many people have been blessed to know you. You may not know who they are, but they're out there. I'm sure there's at least one person out there who can name at least one good quality about you.

Fifth, keep family and friends close. These people will always have your back. They will support you no matter what. When you're in the dark, they guide you in the right direction. When you're in the clear, they're your biggest cheerleaders. The best memories will be made with these near and dear humans.

Sixth, yes you are beautiful. You're drop dead gorgeous. You radiate brightness like a sunflower. Don't let anyone else, including yourself, tell you otherwise. Our exteriors don't mean much; they're just our outer coating that covers up what's inside. What's inside is more significant. Hold your chin high and walk like you're invincible.

Seventh, you're more intelligent than you give yourself credit for. The ability to study a subject like human biology is extraordinary. You're a gifted writer with an immense vocabulary. You know more than the basic college student. Calling yourself stupid is one of the worst things you can do. You're not stupid; you're far from it. Stop it because your smarts are a blessing.

Finally, remember to take care of yourself. Exercise and eat foods that will nourish you. Read inspirational quotes daily. Take a mental health day every once in a while. Talk to a friend when you're feeling down. Give yourself a compliment, whether it's about your favorite feature or your favorite part of your personality. Remind yourself of how strong you are, and that you can make it through the worst of times. Smile and laugh until your stomach hurts. A happy you means a happy life.

I hope I can remember these eight phrases of advice. I hope someone else can use this too. Loving yourself isn't easy, but I'm getting there.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
