Dear Society,
If I’m not thin enough, you tell me to spend money on a gym membership and endless trainers. If I’m not pretty enough, you burn holes in my wallet at hair salons, nail parlors, and cosmetic departments. If I’m not sexy enough, you shove me into Victoria’s Secret and watch my bank account dwindle. If I’m not smart enough, you enroll me in a college with a tuition that will put me in debt for decades. You profit from my self-doubt, and now I’m bankrupt.
You have changed so much over the past century, and people are struggling to keep your pace. You trained us to stay to your standards, however as a result, the community has lost it’s purpose.
Social media has given an ego to all those who use it to promote themselves. A certain amount of likes determines one’s social standing. Students go to medical school with the intention of becoming wealthy rather than with the intention to save lives. The relationship between humans and the environment is lagging because children are learning from a young age to stay indoors and play with their electronics. As a result, generations of adolescents aren’t helping to keep the nature safe and sustainable. The fast food restaurant chain is a major cause of obesity among the United States because humanity prefers ease over hardship. People think they can find happiness in materialistic commodities. Couples don’t meet in person, but rather through internet sites or apps, such as Tinder. Judgement creates walls, boundaries, and burns bridges. Problems that were resolved decades prior are coming back in hazardous levels. Everyone wants revenge, so they opt for violence against violence. Above all, civilization is afraid to be different. No body wants to be the odd man out, and consequentially, the world has become critical of those that do choose to stand out in a crowd.
Society, you are turning mankind against one another. We have been taught to blend together. We have become lazy. We have become selfish. We are slipping backward instead of progressing forward. I fear that natural selection with defeat me as evolution continues to advance and effect the current generation.
We blame you, but we are you.
"People may hate you for being different and not living by society's standards, but deep down, they wish they had the courage to do the same." -Kevin Hart
