We put our best selves on the Internet. We want everyone to see our hard-earned achievements, perfectly executed selfies, and our très chic brunches.
Regular social media sites have become a little more open. We ask for prayers, we update on sicknesses, and we answer Facebook's ever philosophical "what's on your mind?" However, when it comes to the popular dating sites, we stick to one of the 74 selfies we took while looking for perfect lighting.
Well, I said pass. Pass to the perfect selfie, to the cute bio that makes me seem like the total package, a pass to everything.
The project:
Get a Tinder. Yes, I tried it for you, you're welcome. Figure out how to work said Tinder, and be my sailor cursing, book reading, dirt bike loving, intelligent, sassy self.
I decided to keep the account for a week and over the course of that week I got 72 matches and an equal amount of messages.
I don't know what I was expecting exactly.
One of the first guys to message me asked me how my day was going and so I answered in my typical cynic fashion:
"Great! Started my day off with a hearty breakfast of Prozac and Valium! How about you?"
If you don't know me you'd find this slightly disconcerting, so I figured I'd had him beat and I wouldn't be seeing him around.
I was wrong.
The unfiltered result:
Everyone has more behind their profile picture. Everyone has more to them than their 140 character tweet.
By being bold and being out there and not trying to sugarcoat myself, I found out more about some of these people in a day than some people find out in years.
Being real, breeds realness. Showing off your flaws because they're a part of you tooinspires others to do the same. Don't hide behind your profile. Let the skeletons in your closet be free and dance because when other people see you so comfortable with yours, they may just bring theirs and start a party.
