In his most recent attack on the media, Donald Trump as accused the SNL cast and writers of committing a crime in a tweet over the weekend. Guess that he didn't like their sketch very much.
There are so many things wrong with this tweet. Where do I even begin?
Firstly, "Saturday Night Live" is not a news show, not at all, and certainly not in the way Trump seems to think it is. It isn't even comparable to the shows like "The Daily Show" for instance, which is, in fact, a news show, but one that has a commentary which tends to lean towards the humorous. "SNL" is a variety show focused on comedic sketches, the only segment of the show that could be characterized as a news show would be "Weekend Update" which does function as the aforementioned TV show. However, it is a segment that lasts about ten minutes or so and is not even remotely the crux of the show.
Secondly, the tweet is framing the media to be an agent of "The Dems" and therefore, an enemy to Trump. First of all, no. The media and journalism will always be the people's medium. And this only continues the troubling attacks that the President has lobbied on the first amendment. It is more than legal to mock the President on TV. The show has been mocking government officials since it began airing over four decades ago.
Furthermore, and most importantly, this comes in the wake of the Muller investigation beginning to go south. Convenient that Trump would distract everyone with his tweets when things start looking like their going south for him.
tl;dr: "SNL" has been legally mocking President's for almost forty years, and will continue to do so, legally.
