We Should All Give Snaps For Humanities Majors

You guys have major guts and I'm just a tad bit jealous.

We Should All Give Snaps For Humanities Majors

The title may have made this sound like this article was going to be a joke, but I am being completely serious when I say that I am proud of humanities majors.

You guys have the bravery and guts that I just don't have within me. I consider myself to be a person who is pretty open to trying new things and exploring just about everything in the world around me, but I could never make the decision to major in the humanities. You all are going to make your passions for literature, music, history, languages, etc. work for you someday, even if it might seem difficult at this point in time, which is amazing.

I do believe that you all are extremely smart, even if the rest of the world does not. Most of you are looked down on in society because your majors seem impractical, as if you all do not plan for the future at all. I would be extremely surprised if you had not gotten any comments and questions that range from, "So what can you actually do with that degree?" to a plain "That's dumb," or any snide remark. If you have been looking for someone who is on your side, but who is also not one of you, you have come to the right place.

Myself being a social science major sort of puts me in between the negatively seen humanities majors and the positively seen Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) majors. Similar to most of you, I'm guessing, I was a book worm growing up, whether reading on long car rides or after a sports practice.

You could have found me at book club meeting, writing a short story in my bedroom, or discussing history and its effects with just about anybody. I have also always loved listening to music, but I never really got into playing an instrument besides some piano lessons with my grandmother and now I am slowly learning how to play acoustic guitar.

So we do have a lot in common, besides the fact that you guys have guts. I also hope I do not come off as being disappointed with my own majors being in the social sciences field. I am definitely happy with my majors and all the classes that I have been taking for them; I am just admitting that I think you guys are great and I admire you, even though you are taking a different path in life than myself.

A part of me does wish that I did have the nerve to major in the humanities, but the way that I am is just too practical, and I personally believe that majoring in the social sciences will allow me to make the largest positive impact on society that I can muster.

So don't let anyone put you down, because you probably know what you are doing. You might be planning on becoming a teacher, an artist, a musician, or maybe you are still trying to figure out what exactly you want to do.

But despite everything, your courage, and maybe you never thought of it like this, is inspirational and hopefully your success will push others to follow in your footsteps and also become humanities majors that this world needs, even if it doesn't quite know you guys' importance just yet.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
