According to Expanded Ramblings, Snapchat has an average of 178 million daily users; all data says those users are age 15 and over. Personally, I know plenty of people who use Snapchat that are younger than 15. So why does Snapchat allow such sexual content? And for those of us who are 18 and over, do we really enjoy this sexual content? Why can't snapchat show us real news?
Personally, I love to check my phony horoscope every Monday on Cosmo, but I have to go through at least five articles about sex toys or sex stories. True, there is no explicit content, but a condom on a banana still ruins my appetite Monday morning. I know that Cosmopolitan is known as a sex magazine, but they have overdone it. When Discover was released, Cosmo said, "The Cosmo team will handpick the best stories from Cosmopolitan.com and deliver them to you by 8 a.m. everyday, so you can catch up on everything that matters before you even get out of bed," on their website.
Last time I checked, cleavage, sex toys, and sex stories are not at all what matter before 8 a.m. or any other time whether you are above 18 or not.
And it's not just Cosmo, its other publishers on Discover like Brother, DailyMail, BuzzFeed, and iHeartradio just to name a few. Imagine the snapchat users who are 12 years old or so that use the app daily. Why doesn't Snapchat allow restrictions for them? Why can't we opt out of seeing articles? According to Business Insider, "Snapchat still allows Discover partners to show sensitive content if they deem it newsworthy". NEWSWORTHY?! How are the 12 sexiest things guys do considered newsworthy? Why do we care about one thing a guy thinks when he can't make you orgasm, let alone 14? How is Demi's cleavage more newsworthy than the earthquake that killed 400,000 people on the Iraq-Iran border on November 13th?
I can't watch my friends' stories without seeing some celebrity's cleavage or the word "sexy". As a Christian it is a challenge to look over that and not think twice about it. I mean imagine if Snapchat allowed you to follow things that showed Bible verses or inspirational quotes. Think about how guys might treat girls differently or how girls thought about themselves. The world would be a better place if we focused on working to bring attention to issues outside of the bedroom. I get that "sex sells" but this is way too much.
Snapchat has terms of service that require warnings before sexual content is displayed and prohibits sexual cover photos. So who decides what is deemed appropriate sexual content instead of explicit sexual content?
Now, show me a story about puppies.
