People are arguing that Smartphones are becoming a serious issue. So, our phones are brutally efficient at addressing an ancient desire. But is that always a good thing? Technology, in general, is everywhere. In our generation, it’s not hard to spot someone on their phone. Researchers claim that cellphones are limiting our creativity. Todd Leopoid, author of “Why Being A Thinker Means Pocketing Your Cellphone,” claims that cellphones have changed society, as well Doug Gross, author of “Have Smartphones Killed Boredom?” However, cellphones aren’t limiting creativity. Cellphones can allow people to stay in touch with family and friends. Cellphones also keep people updated about situations around the world, let alone, they also allow people in threatening situations to reach help sooner. Additionally, cellphones allow people to research faster for a quicker answer. The world changes everyday… but does the world accept it?
People are usually found on their cellphones, looking down at the glowing screen. A few years ago, this wasn’t an option. People are contacting friends, enjoying conversations over phone. Researchers claim that people are always on their phone. Texting, skyping, talking… all on their phone. But is that necessarily a bad thing? “We surf the Web; we scan news on our phones; we keep our minds digitally occupied in a million ways,” says epidemiologist Caroline Buckee. Researchers and other people make cellphones look and sound like a negative thing. However, cellphones allow you to keep in touch with distant friends and family members. This wasn’t an option for many, years ago. They believe that cellphones are unnecessary, because they simply didn’t grow up with these choices. If they wanted to get together with a friend, they had to write a letter, or ask them in advance, in person. If you wanted to see how your distant family was, you would wait until you visited. Today, you can simply click a few buttons and see a movie with a friend an hour later. Older people, are not as involved with cellphones, because they didn’t grow up knowing how to use one. Yes, they can learn, but some refuse, believing that it is just a waste of time. However, cellphones are just an easier, faster way to stay connected with friends and family. Such as, social media. Many older audiences don’t see the point of social media, therefore, claiming that social media is no good. However, social media is just an advanced way to stay in touch and keep friends and family updated.
People complain that cellphones are just ways to keep people entertained. However, cellphones are an excellent way to stay updated with the world around you. Years ago, if you wanted to hear an update about the war, you would have to wait for the local paper. Today, our generation is a click away from knowing what is happening around them. For example, ISIS. Many complain that the internet shouldn’t display the news, wanting to avoid chaos. However, keeping people updated about the situations going on, is smart and alerting. Sure, knowing can frighten you a little, but it also makes you more aware that you need to keep an eye out, for your own safety. Let alone, cellphones provide faster ways to reach for help. If you are in a situation where you are being robbed or harmed, you can call 911. Also, cellphones allow people to check the weather sooner. This can alert people if strong storms or tornados are coming their way. Some people who don’t favor technology deny that cellphones are actually very helpful.
You have a huge history assignment due in a few days. You can either run to the library and grab a huge textbook, or pick up your cellphone, and use Google to look up information you need. What would you rather do? Nicholas Carr is the author of “The Shallows,” which was an expansion of his Atlantic Monthly cover story,”Is Google Making Us Stupid?” Many claim that cellphones are limiting our creativity, however, that isn’t the case. Our generation might not read huge textbooks for an assignment, but that isn’t limiting our creativity. Google, in fact, is not making us stupid. People claim that using Google isn’t the best way to find research. However, cellphones allow people to get answers must faster than sitting down and reading a huge book. If you need to look something up, it’s right there at your fingertips.
“Researchers say this all makes sense. Fiddling with our phones, they say, addresses a basic human need to cure boredom by any means necessary,” says author Doug Gross. Many view phones as a waste of money and time. They claim that people can’t deal with boredom the way some people use to. Cellphones are both underrated and overrated. Researchers say that cellphones are changing society and the way we live. That, they may be right, but is it changing our life in a bad way? “When you’re habituated to constant stimulation, when you lack it, you sort of don’t know what to do with yourself,” says Christopher Lynn. People argue that cellphones are no good for people. However, they do not see all the benefits the cellphone provides. Cellphones allow people to stay connected, updated, and safe, as well. Not only that, but cellphones allow you to use the internet, therefore, allowing you to research topics or questions. Cellphones might keep people entertained when they become bored, but that isn’t a bad thing.
In conclusion, cellphones are not limiting creativity. They are actually allowing people to stay connected with friends, family, and the world. Cellphones. Small objects you can put in your back pocket, or carry in your hand. That small object contains much more than the world knows. Cellphones can keep you updated with your friends, with your family, and even the evolving world around you. “Before smartphones came out, you had that down time where you sit on the bus and your mind just kind of wanders and you think of these amazing things. You get out that old thing called pen and paper and you jot it down,” said Jeromie Williams. Well, the world is going to change. It does everyday. Some big, some small. We just have to be prepared for whatever comes next.
