I didn't personally know Riley Thomas, but yet I am still affected by her and her story. After fighting a rare form of cancer, Riley passed away on August 26th, 2016, at the young age of 12 years old.
She was strong and she was a fighter. While I still struggle to understand how something so earth shattering can happen to a child who is so young, I find peace in knowing that she is in a better place and she was supported by one of the best communities in the world.
Riley was a symbol of hope and the people of Monmouth rallied around her. Her strength and courage was felt by all.
Monmouth, Illinois is a small town known by few, but I am very proud to call it my home. Our small, tight-knit community is full of people with large hearts and giving spirits. Whenever someone is going through a difficult time, we are quick to rally around them and do whatever we can to help lessen the load. I have seen my community come together for good and make a difference many times.
Tragedy, unfortunately, is unavoidable. It's important to surround yourself with people who you know will support you in a time of need and I know I will always have that in Monmouth, Illinois. That in and of itself offers more than a big city ever could.
