I've written a few articles for Mental Health Month, and they've been directed to bring awareness to mental health. However, what's really important is helping people who have mental health issues, so here are a bunch of different resources and uplifting things that might be a small bit of help in a huge struggle.
Disclaimer: These will not all work for everyone. Everyone is different and some of you might hate some of these. However, I'm hoping that at least one thing on this list helps someone out.
1. 7 Cups Of Tea
7 Cups of Tea is an online resource where you can anonymously vent to someone--a trained active listener--or even, with some money, talk to a trained therapist. If you need to talk but don't feel like you have anyone, this is a great resource. You can also volunteer to be a listener!
2. Stress Analyst
Sometimes it helps to have someone talk you down from stressful situations, and that's where Relax Online comes in. This helps guide you through realizing where your anxiety is coming from and soothing it, and reassures you that it's okay to not know why you're stressed!
3. The Good News Network
The Good News Network is just what it sounds like--a place for happy, uplifting news from around the world. It can remind you that things aren't so bad right now, and give you some much-needed positivity.
4. Cute Animal Gifs
If you're an animal person like me, animal gifs help make me laugh or smile when things feel awful. Here's a link to a blog with lots of them!
5. Shiba Inu Live Webcam
Listen, shiba inu puppies are adorable. So have a webcam feed of shiba inu pups.
6. Silk Game
Silk is an interactive art medium that's really hecking calming. You can choose your favorite color and make pretty trails of color. Might not work for some, but I like this for when I'm anxious, paired with some calming music. It's available on iOs too!
7. Soundrown
For some of my friends, silence makes anxiety really bad and ambient noise helps. With Soundrown, you can choose different ambient sounds and make it your own!
8. Erasing The Distance
Erasing The Distance has a bunch of resources, sorted by mental health issue, for struggles of just about any kind, as well as crisis helplines.
9. Here To Help
Here To Help is a great resource for family members, people who are struggling, and anyone who wants to know more about mental health. There are self-assessments, pathways to get help, and advice to help your loved ones with mental illness.
10. IM Alive
I am one of those people who has such severe anxiety over calling people that calling a suicide hotline would have not been a desirable option if I ever got severely suicidal or in huge crisis. So here is essentially a hotline that can be accessed through IM rather than a call! If you or a loved one are in crisis and have trouble with phone anxiety, this is for you.
11. Positive Sentiments From Twitter
Sometimes you need a little bit of happy. Hopefully this can be it! There's so many amazing and positive voices around and this is just a tiny sampling of them! There's also the quote from a fortune cookie that I still remember and have to this day: "Time heals all wounds. Keep your chin up."
Some days really suck when you're dealing with mental illness, and these things won't make everything better. But sometimes you just need an uplifting sentiment or some cute shiba inu to get you back on your feet. They can be a little thing to hold onto.
I don't know you personally, but I know you can get through anything, and you are strong and can persevere. It might not get better right now, and it doesn't magically get better, but I know you have the strength to do whatever you need to do and make it through the tough times.
This Internet stranger is in your corner and I'm rooting for you!!
