Finding The "Balance" In College Is Next To Impossible And That's Ok

Sleep, study, social, repeat.

As I sat down to write this article, I had an intense revelation — the two-month mark on my university adventure is right around the corner. It feels like just yesterday I was celebrating reaching one month. In many ways, college is flying by just like everyone said it would. Family weekend came and went before I realized it. My first midterm season is coming to a close, with limited consequence. I booked my flight home for Thanksgiving.

As the time flies by, I can’t help but ask myself: am I making the most of my college experience? I think the answer is no — and though unfortunate, its inevitable.

Sleep, study, and social life — prior to college, I was warned that I would only be able to choose two. I thought that my struggle would involve trying to solve the puzzle that is balancing those three things. Yet after two months, I realize it's not even as simple as trying to find the balance.

Personally, I feel like I only have a hold on two of those concepts, to the point that I don’t even have to worry about the third. With the lack of a clique, my social life is lacking immensely compared to high school — which is saying a lot, since I didn’t have a huge social life then, either.

I find myself with more than enough time to get my homework done and get at least nine hours of sleep each night — an eternity compared to the six to seven hours, on average, of sleep I got in high school.

This is only possible because I don’t have constant social distractions. After two months, part of me is worried that I haven’t found my place yet. However, there’s the other part of me that is relieved to not have this distraction — after all, I did come to college to get an education.

Knowing myself, I always pick friends, family, and entertainment over homework. Not having to make that choice is refreshing — not to mention much less stressful on my part.

I think most people assume that everyone around them has found that perfect balance and that they are the only ones struggling. I recently had a conversation with a friend from home, who goes to San Francisco State.

Compared to back home, our interaction is limited to sporadic texting and the occasional phone call. However, I always see her Snapchat Story, in which she posts pictures and videos of her daily adventures with her new friends.

Every time I see these, I’m envious — and I told her as such. I thought she had the balance down — until she started yawning every five seconds. Granted, it was after midnight, but I wasn’t remotely tired. I then realized she hadn’t found the balance; instead, she had picked her social life and school over her sleep.

What I first thought was a conscious decision is actually just a byproduct of other decisions — of course, she is tired because she stayed up late with her friends.

In this same way, I haven’t made those connections yet because I’ve allowed myself to focus on homework and getting a decent amount of sleep. Then you have my roommate, who sometimes rushes through her homework so she can go out and still get enough sleep.

Even though the time seems to be passing faster and faster, remember that it has only been two months. Freshmen — this is two months out of a four year (at the least) experience.

We still have plenty of time to “find the balance” — or just switch our preferences around.

Ultimately, you are in control — its okay to slack off in one department, or all three. No one actually expects you to figure it all out. If they do, ask them how they are doing; chances are, they haven’t either.

Remember — there are only two sides to a scale.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
