Weight is a topic a lot of people hate talking about and it is understandable why. Our society is so fixated on being super healthy and making sure everyone is a certain image that it is very difficult to be our authentic selves anymore.
Yes, we should all strive to be healthy but not at the risk of losing who we are.
Fat shaming is very prevalent in society and everybody knows that it should go away but the reality is that it isn't going away. People will continue to be rude about other's weight and say whatever they want.
The same goes for skinny shaming. A lot of people believe that skinny shaming doesn't exist. People who are skinny are often told that they should love the way they look or what people are envious of them. Being underweight is no better than being overweight.
According to the National Eating Disorders Association, 65% of people with eating disorders say bullying has contributed to their disorder. Being told that you are too fat or too skinny can lead to dangerous situations regarding oneself.
I have always been on the underweight side until recently and I've received my fair share of negative comments. I chose to shrug the comments off because I knew they would just keep coming. People don't know when to stop which is unfortunate.
Being skinny shamed and told to eat a hamburger (we have all heard that) is no different than fat-shaming because it is still shaming. A lot of people struggle with weight image so no one needs to hear negative comments about themselves unless it's a doctor concerned with their health.
So let's encourage people to reach a healthy weight but don't do it in a rude way. We need to be supportive and friendly. Any other way is not the way to go about helping.
Stop shaming. Period.
