The amount of girls in the skate world today is growing in numbers, but it is still considered a rarity compared to the boys. Skate Kitchen is an all-female group of skateboarders in New York City. The girls started to become recognized after participating in filmmaker Crystal Moselle's short film That One Day.
Being a girl in the skate world is like wearing neon in a room full of people who are wearing black. It is easy to stand out and all eyes are on you. If a guy messes up a trick it is no big deal, but if a girl does she will get some pretty nasty hazing from the guys who are watching her. The Skate Kitchen girls skate together as a group because they empower one another and once they can prove the guys wrong, they will feel invincible.
Ranging from ages 18 to 23, the Skate Kitchen members include Rachelle Martinez, Nina Moran, Ardelia Lovelace, Ajani Russell, Jules Lorenzo, Brenn Lorenzo, and Kabrina Adams. At one point all of these women have felt a sense of isolation.
18-year-old Rachelle Martinez is the leader of the group. During an interview with Papermag, Rachelle explains how she came up with the name "Skate Kitchen".
"Whenever I read the comments on YouTube for girl skaters, I'd always notice that the same stupid comment popped up about 'the best place for women is in the kitchen' so I always had the idea that if I ever had a crew, we would be Skate Kitchen."
Breaking stereotypes, Rachelle thought that it would be hysterical to say that girls do belong in a kitchen…a skate kitchen that is.
With an unexpected 67,000 followers on Instagram, the crew is continuously posting influential and hysterical footage. They are not afraid to be themselves in a world that tells them that they have to act a certain way because they are girls. The crew influences thousands of women and girls nationwide to stay true to themselves and embrace their uniqueness.
As a girl skater, I constantly find myself watching their videos to gain inspiration. Even though I am not one to skate gnarly pools and grind rails like them, I do like to cruise around the grounds of GCU or my neighborhood with friends who are also girls. When I skate, it feels like I am flying. It is a such a feeling of freedom. There is no better feeling than picking up my longboard after a demanding day and clearing my head with the sound of the wheels spinning fast beneath my feet.
Coming to theaters in August, Skate Kitchen the movie will be released. This is a huge upbringing for girls in the skating community because it will tell a relatable coming-of-age story that a lot of young women can relate to. The young crew of fierce skater women are redefining what it means to be kind, beautiful, and brave.
