Whether you live on campus or you’re a commuter, having to travel around campus during the wintertime absolutely sucks. It really can get annoying to have to layer up when walking around outside in the below-freezing temperatures only to then shed all those layers once you get inside the sweltering buildings. However, just like layers, everything on this list is certainly an essential when going to class during the awful winter months.
1. LAYER UP
As mentioned before, layers are what’s going to keep you from freezing to death while trekking all across campus. Long Winter parkas are probably the best and most comfortable things to wear, but you can also go for a heavy jacket with a few sweaters on underneath. Having the proper Winter boots are also important: you definitely don’t want to ruin your nice Uggs by wearing them around a snowy, slushy campus. Winter hats, scarfs, gloves, and fuzzy socks are also great to have to keep you warm from head to toe. It might be a pain taking all of it off once you get to class, but it’s definitely worth it while walking around through the blistering wind and snow.
2. Stock Up Your Car
This might sound a little silly, but if you drive a really unreliable car, having some extra stuff in your trunk can be a lifesaver. Those of you who do have old crappy cars will know what I mean. Keep a few blankets and maybe some snacks, if you’re feeling really crazy, in your trunk just in case your car decides to crap out on you. You could also go the extra mile and throw in some extra clothes if you really feel like Ol’ Bessie’s days are numbered.
3. Stock Up On Comfort Foods
This one is for all my resident college students. Since we live in New England, we’re prone to terrible winter storms that can sometimes leave you stranded in your dorm room. To avoid starving to death while the campus figures out how to shovel the various feet of snow out of the way, definitely think about shopping for all your favorite comfort foods. These can range from mac n’ cheese, to soup, to chili you can whip up in your microwave. Hopefully, your campus will be able to restore power relatively quickly so you can actually make these foods.
4. Heated Blankets
These great little inventions are one of the best things you can own during the Wintertime. If you’re like me and suffer from poor circulation in your hands and feet—a nifty little thing called Raynaud's disease—then a heated blanket will do a world of good for you on a cold, snowy day.
5. Moisturizers
As it gets colder outside and the temperatures rise in your houses and on campus, dry skin and lips are unavoidable. That’s why having a small bottle of hand lotion and some chapstick will help keep your hands and lips soft.
6. Thermal Mugs/Tumblrs
For those of you who like to keep your money or prefer making your own coffee or tea in the morning, pouring it in one of these mugs will help keep it hot while your trekking to your class. There are all different kinds of styles and colors, so it can be as stylish as you!
