My Future Plans Include My Passport, Not A Child

My plans are my plans.

Ever since I was young, traveling was a part of my life. When I was 7 or 8 months old, my parents took me to Germany to see my family on my mother's side. Obviously, I don't remember, but I really believed that helped grow my love of traveling.

I take every opportunity I can take. If a friend asks me to go on a road trip with them, I get so excited, even if its somewhere only an hour away.

My future career, God willing, is to be able to teach English around the world. I work hard to learn new languages and learn as many cultures as I can. Even though I want to teach children, that doesn't mean I want a child of my own.

When someone is asking me about my future plans and goals, I simply tell them that I hope to be traveling or living in a different country. Most of the time I get positive responses, but other times I get some reactions that aren't so encouraging.

One thing I always get is, "Well what about marriage or having children?" or "Won't you get tired of traveling and want a child?" or even "I want kids by the time I'm 28." While there is nothing wrong with that, I personally don't see that in my future.

Another thing that is discouraging is when I talk to people about my travels and where I want to go and they seem uninterested and close-minded to the world. That's fine too. I may also never understand why people don't want to travel, but it's fine, as these are my personal goals, not theirs.

First off, I'm not even in a relationship and when I am dating, I typically want to be with a man who loves to travel almost as much as I do. Clearly, I haven't found him yet.

Secondly, just because society wants us as women to have children as soon as possible, I choose to not do that. Call me selfish, but I don't want my child to stand in the way of achieving my dreams. When I tell people that, their initial reaction is usually "oh that will change when you're pregnant."

Again, no thanks. Maybe on my journeys, I'll meet the person I am meant to be with but that's not the reason I want to travel.

I want to travel because there is so much beauty and history that isn't shown all the time in the media and in books. I watch these documentaries about people traveling and I would love to do that, not even have my own show, but go where they've gone and hopefully see what they've seen.

No matter what happens in my future, I want to be able to say my passport is included in it.

Eventually I will want to settle down and have a child, but for now, my passport is my child.

One day, I really hope to say that I have seen the world, but that day hasn't come yet.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
