Spring quarter is in full swing and that means we are in the home stretch, Bruins. Soon enough, in ten weeks, summer break will be upon us. Here are some life hacks that I have come across that, I think, will improve your daily life and keep you motivated and energized for studying and fun throughout this quarter.
According to experts, one should get seven hours of sleep per night. Shawn Youngstedt of the College of Nursing and Health Innovation at Arizona State University, Phoenix, says that the "lowest mortality and morbidity is with seven hours." Sleep is very important, whether we realize it or not (especially us college kids)
The Choose My Plate website, sponsored by the U.S Government, explicitly states that "adults should do at least two hours and thirty minutes each week of aerobic physical activity at a moderate level or one hour and fifteen minutes each week at a vigorous level." With the stress of college, we often forget that we do need physical activity since it benefits our health and increases our longevity. Although it is easy to fall into bad habits, two hours of moderate exercise or one hour of vigorous exercise each week isn't a whole lot of time to commit.
According to research done at Southeast Missouri State University, "the best way to study is to focus for forty to ninety minutes, then take a ten minute break." During those ten minutes, researchers recommend doing some sort of exercise since it helps with your concentration while studying. It's worth trying, right?
And of course, naps. We, being college kids, love naps. I know I do! As much as I love taking hours to nap during the afternoon, the best recommended nap length is ten to twenty minutes. An article in the Huffington Post states that, " Longer naps can cause sleep inertia, or a period of grogginess and reduced performance caused by waking in the middle of deep sleep." Maybe that's why I feel so tired and unmotivated even after I wake up from a nap!
As the last quarter of the year comes, try out some of these tips! You never know what you can benefit from them.
