Social media was made with the intent to create and share content or simply to connect with others. Social media can become addicting with caring too much about how many followers, subscribers or friends that you have. Does it even matter and what does it prove about you? That you’re popular? That you spend way too much time on social media and you need a break?
Although we would like to believe that social media is having a positive impact, that’s simply not always the case. Most people are oblivious to the repercussions that are being caused by sharing our life every minute of the day. What did you do today? Where did you go today? Who did you talk to today? What did you eat today? What did you wear today?
What I believe we are all guilty of scrolling through someone else’s profile, comparing your daily life to someone else’s, comparing what they have to what you don’t have. It’s unrealistic and unfair to yourself, so stop. Our journeys are different for a reason.
You’ve become obsessed with your size or weight
One of the hardest things for me is dealing with my size. I’m just too conscious. I’m not 200 pounds but I’m not 100 pounds either. When I go shopping and I see all these cute clothes that I can’t wear because I feel too fat or too ugly it makes me sad. It makes me think, “What is wrong with me? Why can’t I be normal?” Normal doesn’t exist, it’s fake.
This whole social media thing has created the “normal”. What’s normal then? Being Underweight with everyone being skinny? Why should everyone be the same when we grow up being told to be different? Just be you, be confident, be happy but most importantly; love yourself.
You’ve lost touch with what YOU like
Lately, I’ve been interested in things that doesn’t seem like me just because I saw it on the internet. For example, I’m decorating my room but I’m changing my usual style of how I would decorate it. Some would say that its just me growing up but I do believe that I am being impacted by the internet to find an “aesthetic’ that best suits me. Social media can influence you in many ways, it can change your views on any topic.
“Grass is always greener on the other side” mentality.
Things are good and it can always be better. Obstacles are just part of your journey and everyone’s journey is different.
Unnecessary drama
Social media always has unnecessary drama. You can live without it.
It’s ruining your sleep schedule
I had a roommate who would stay up almost all night on Instagram following people because that was all she cared about was her followers number. Sleep is so important especially in college and there’s always more important things to worry about than social media.
Try a social media detox and you will be so surprised at how much wasted time you spend scrolling through Facebook or something. Be more productive and do something
