The mitten state, home to the four seasons that leave you in a constant state of awe. Heck, having all four seasons show themselves in one day is a normal occurrence in Michigan. Sometimes it is a love hate relationship having to bring layers upon layers to different activities because you never know what the weather might be. Yet the sunsets and the lakes offset the hassle, and help make this state such a beautiful place to live. Here are 16 signs that prove you also are from the Great Lakes State.
1. Going to class in negative 24-degree weather because the snow gods decided not to give us a snow day since it has to be negative 25-degrees to call school off.
2. You are never 30 minutes from a lake. We're called the Great Lakes State for a reason.
3. You know what the acronym for HOMES is without even thinking about it. For non Michiganders- HOMES stands for Huron, Ontario, Michigan, Erie, Superior.
4. The thought of salt water confuses you.
5. UP is not only a direction, but a place (yoopers!).
6. Forever showing people where you live on your hand.
7. You always have your own snow day ritual.
8.You see Detroit for what it is, not what it was. Detroit is on the rise, and is such a beautiful city.
9. Your allegiance either lies with Michigan or Michigan State.
10. You have worn 18 layers under your Halloween costume because there is a chance it could start snowing at any moment. My friends and I looked more like puffy snowflakes than Cinderella when we were younger.
11. Ohio State is a word banned from any Michiganders vocabulary. The football rivalry is something we do not take lightly and it's always the biggest game out of the year (other than Michigan State).
12. You take a cliché picture of the leaves every fall. Even though most people have grown up with the same leaves coming and going from the trees, we always stop and stare during those prime months in fall in order to get the "perfect" Instagram picture to capture the essence of fall in Michigan.
13. Vacations and spring break destinations are Cedar Point, Mackinaw Island, or Kalahari.
14. Coney Island is the land of the best coney dogs.
15. The seasons occur in different months but don't forget to wear layers because it could be sunny, rainy, and snowy all in one day.
16. Forever being proud of the "Mitten" state and being called a Michigander.
From the wonderful sites Michigan has to offer to the great sunsets, there is so much pride we have in being from the Great Lakes State. You can take someone out of Michigan, but you can never take the Michigan out of them.
