As college students, we walk a fine line between being an adolescent and an adult every day. At certain times, we are predominantly one while others we are a solid mixture of both. In case you're not sure, here's a few signs that show you're adulting.
You check your bank account at least twice a week.
You've come to the point where you know you have to manage your money wisely. This means making decisions on what you should and shouldn't buy, despite your desire to have things. It also means that you learn how to adequately budget and get the most for your money.
You've learned to prioritize.
At least some of the time. There are times when going to hang out becomes less of a priority. Instead, work and school come first. Of course, this doesn't mean to blow off your friends all the time, it just means that there are occasions when going to have a few drinks just isn't in the schedule.
You have a calendar of some sort.
Whether it's on your phone or a physical planner, you have some way of keeping tracking of events in your life. Let's be real, relying on your memory isn't the best method, especially when you have a million things to do every day (and that's not necessarily an exaggeration).
You know how to cook something other than Ramen and cereal.
I mean it may just be microwaving mac and cheese, but who cares. It's a step in the right direction. Everyone who learns how to cook starts with the basics. Even if the basics is simply preheating the oven to 350 so you can defrost your pre-cooked chicken tenders.
Your birthday list is things you need.
Now things like socks, grocery store gift cards, and gas cards are key items on your birthday list. Between being close to broke and a bit of desperation, you found yourself actually wanting these things, mostly because you needed them so badly.
You schedule your own appointments.
This is a big step. Not calling mom to set up your next dentist or doctor visit shows a level of maturity often found in adults. Of course, when all the paper work comes out, you still might be calling to get some of the family medical history but there's no shame in that.
If you've done even a few of these things, you are easing into adulthood my friend. While it may be slightly (extremely) terrifying, you'll start to notice that these things get easier with time. Or so we've been told.
