We are going to start this off by addressing the elephant in the room. Yes, Noah Centineo is the greatest thing since sliced bread. The bee's knees. The cat's meow. He is pretty adorable, OK? Moving on now.
The following review contains spoilers.
Underneath the main rom-com plot of "Sierra Burgess Is A Loser," there is an extremely important subplot that should be talked about more. That is the friendship that brews between Sierra and Veronica. When Veronica gave Jamey Sierra's number as a joke it ultimately backfires when they end up hitting it off until Sierra realizes that Jamey is thinking he's talking to Veronica. When Veronica's hip and cool college boyfriend dumps her Sierra agrees to help her seem more intelligent by tutoring her while Veronica does a few FaceTime calls and dates with Jamey for Sierra.
Now, we are going to pause for a second. Yes, I have read the movie reviews that have been circulating the internet recently about how the movie is romanticizing catfishing and the other problematic issues with the storyline. But, I think there is always so much negativity in the world and people fail to see the some of the good that comes out of the movie. (And by focusing on the good I am, in no way, dismissing the problematic points of the movie, I'm simply choosing to not focus on them for this article.)
Throughout the movie, we learn more about Veronica's background and why she is the way that she is. It almost makes you feel a little sympathetic for her seeing the personality of her mom and her situation. Sierra sees this too and begins to change her view on Veronica. While this is all happening, an unexpected friendship forms. Typically in these kinds of movies where the mean girl and the loser are involved they never become friends, and if they do it never seems genuine. Seeing the true bond between Veronica and Sierra was oh so refreshing.
Another refreshing point of the movie was Jamey's character. He was a quarterback AND he was a genuine human being AND smart?! Where can I find my own? Having a character like Jamey really shows people that just because you are the quarterback of your high school football team or a varsity cheerleader doesn't mean you have to fit that mold. This is coming from a sorority girl who is deeply obsessed with all things Marvel Universe. We need more movies with dynamic characters like Jamey!
Overall, "Sierra Burgess is a Loser" may have had some problematic moments but it doesn't take away from the fact that this movie was something we all needed. A refreshing high school rom-com with more than just your average jock, band geek, and cheerleader. Oh yeah, and it was nice to see that Barb made it back from the upside down and Peter Kavinsky is working on his habit of saying "whoa whoa whoa."
